"The Goonies" legacy sequel is making progress towards production

It’s perhaps inevitable that 'The Goonies' would get a sequel, given the wave of legacy follow-ups in Hollywood. Fans of the 1985 adventure-comedy cling to it with particular intensity. While many ’80s and ’90s films carry a nostalgic sheen, 'The Goonies' may take the cake. Recent updates offer good news for those anticipating its return, or for the less invested, simply news.

While no director, cast, or plot details have been announced, the 'Goonies' sequel does have a script in progress. Potsy Ponciroli, in Venice for his film 'Motor City,' confirmed that fact in conversation. “I have turned in a first draft, which was very well received, and I’m on a second draft and I’m about 95 percent done with that, so we’re moving in the right direction,” Ponciroli said.

Beyond the encouraging news about the progress, and apparently the quality, of the screenplay, Ponciroli addressed the elephant in the room. “I know there’s a lot of, ‘Do we need a new 'Goonies'?’” he acknowledged. He was mostly speaking to those who treat the original film as a sacred cow.

I’m the biggest fan of the original, it’s my favorite movie of all-time. I’d never "redo" "The Goonies." To me it was a story that never ended so this is the movie I want to see as one of its biggest fans.

Of course, 'The Goonies' did have a proper ending, complete with a final scene and credits. That doesn’t mean there isn’t room to build on the original story -- it’s not 'Beneath the Planet of the Apes,' after all. While intense fandom can be a double-edged sword, past franchises, including comic-book movies, have benefited when projects were guided by creators who genuinely loved the source material.

The takeaway: fans excited for the 'Goonies' sequel shouldn’t have to wait too long, and the project appears to be in capable hand.
