The only thing that is surprising is that it has taken this long for a Snoop Dogg biopic to be in the works. He's been both famous and ubiquitous for decades at this point. Snoop has been in movies and all over television, and he seems to be in every-other commercial. Remember when he hosted "The Joker's Wild?"
With the Bob Marley and Bob Dylan biopics in 2024 doing so well, the market for musician biopics is probably at a fever pitch. The Snoop film has a director in Craig Brewer, who has directed films such as "Hustle & Flow." It also now has a star. Jonathan Daviss will be playing Calvin Broadus in Brewer's movie.
If you know Daviss, it's likely from his role of Pope Heyward on "Outer Banks." He's done very little on the film front, so this is a major step forward in his career. One assumes that the production wanted an "unknown" for the role, which is to say an actor whose casting wouldn't be showy. Also, given that Daviss is 25, it gives a sense of what time in Snoop's life this film will be focused on.
The casting of somebody like Daviss also keeps speculation from overrunning this biopic since it's hard to really picture a clear "Daviss-as-Snoop" biopic from Craig Brewer. It will end up becoming a matter of seeing the first trailer from Universal when it arrives.
