Timothée Chalamet is set to star in a sports biopic about ping pong legend Marty Reisman.
The film, called Marty Supreme , was announced in a tweet by A24, embedded below. It’s co-written by Benny Safdie and Ronald Bronstein, who previously wrote 2019 drama Uncut Gems.
A sequel to Uncut Gems was in production, but Benny bowed out in order to focus on Marty Supreme. Chalamet, meanwhile, is still attached to the sequel to Dune: Part II, titled Dune Messiah, but he couldn’t pass up an opportunity to work with one of the Safdie brothers.
Chalamet wrote an essay for Variety in 2019 expressing his admiration for the Safdies, saying, “The New York directing duo have taken it upon themselves to keep alive the mantle of gritty and raucously interior inner-city films built by spiritual kin like Martin Scorsese and Spike Lee.”
In terms of Dune 3, a speculative release date was revealed for Dune Messiah.
As for Marty Reisman, the influential figure was a table tennis champion, winning 22 major titles from 1946 to 2002 and five bronze medals at the World Table Tennis Championships. At 67, he became the oldest player to win an open national competition in a racket sport, and passed away in 2012.
