Watch a Worn 1977 STAR WARS Poster Get Restored
A restored 1977 Tom Jung Star Wars poster. Fourth Cone Restoration/YouTube

The original posters for George Lucas’ original Star Wars (now A New Hope) are the definition of iconic. Lucasfilm produced several posters for Star Wars for different markets, and for merchandising purposes. But artist Tom Jung’s classic “Style A” poster, which features a sexier Luke and Leia beneath a looming Darth Vader, is perhaps the most beloved. But these original one-sheets in good condition are hard to find these days. Now, YouTube channel Fourth Cone Restoration has found a 48-year-old Star Wars poster that was yellow and discolored, restoring it to a more pristine condition. You can watch the 5-minute restoration video below:

The Tom Jung 1977 Star Wars poster was the inspiration for the Hildebrandt Brothers’ “Style B” poster. That one utilized the same basic design, but with a brighter color scheme. This was because Fox wanted a “less dark,” more kid-friendly version of the same concept. That version of the poster had R2-D2 and C-3PO in the corner of the image, which Jung’s did not. Once Twentieth Century Fox saw the droids in that version of the poster, they added them into Jung’s original art. But Tom Jung didn’t add them in himself. Instead, original Teen Titans artist Nick Cardy drew these versions of the droids.

Obviously, this restoration had its limits. The creases in the posters where the folds exist remain, even if they are less distracting to look at. But the yellowing effect is largely dialed back. And we’re sure the poster looks very close to how it looked in front of movie theaters back in 1977. The Fourth Cone Restoration YouTube channel has a lot of other movie poster restoration videos on its channel, including for other posters in the original Star Wars trilogy. And every single one is a poster we’d proudly display on our walls, the way Jabba displayed Han Solo frozen in Carbonite.
