Marvel movies have cooled off in popularity, and Marvel TV shows have been struggling for a while now, maybe from leaning too hard on the same formula. By the time 'Ironheart' lands, one has to wonder what purpose it even serves.
'Marvel Zombies,' though, at least feels different. The violent, gory animated series isn’t tied down by the usual MCU lore, and the trailer, complete with a reminder that even the preview is rated TV-MA, makes that clear.
Animated or not, there’s a real bite to the irreverence of 'Marvel Zombies.' The zombie genre already grants permission for gore and chaos, but here it’s turned loose inside the Marvel sandbox. It recalls the brilliance of John Carpenter’s 'Assault on Precinct 13,' basically a zombie movie where the “zombies” are alive. The series imagines what happens when a zombie outbreak ravages the Marvel universe, leaving even icons like Captain America to meet gruesome ends.
The trailer doesn’t shy away from carnage either, showing characters sliced in half and torn apart. Whether 'Marvel Zombies' proves to be more than a stylish curio remains to be seen, but at only four episodes, the commitment is minimal. The first episode lands on Disney+ September 24 and it already looks like a wild ride.
