The NBA reached a deal with the NBPA that will stop the testing of players for marijuana use before the season 2023-24. Substance use was always a grey area in the league, and some players were open about their use of it. Since the deal, there have been few public outings for marijuana use.

In the recent Club Shay Shay episode hosted by Shannon Sharpe, Wiz Khalifa discussed some of his favorite weed aficionados among the players, retired and active. While NFL Hall of Famer was shocked by some of those, most of the fans already knew about it.

Durant's name surprised Sharpe

At first, Sharpe asked Khalifa about some former and legendary players that he thought were big names in the "weed community." He asked about Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bill Walton, but Wiz quickly waived his assumptions.

The NFL legend was shocked when Kevin Durant's name was mentioned.

Sharpe seemed really surprised by Khalifa's mention of "The Slim Reaper" when he asked: "KD smoked?"

"KD's with the weed, bro," Khalifa confirmed.

Just before he admitted that two-time champ smokes weed big time, he said that his favorite is Matt Barnes.

"Oh, Matt Barnes. Yeah, Matt, yeah," Wiz added. "He's one of my favorite pothead athletes."

Barnes and Durant are just a couple of the players that are known for their use.

Cannabis culture runs deep in the NBA

Michael Beasley was caught several times with marijuana in his possession. J.R. Smith was suspended for five games because of failing an NBA drug test. Lamar Odom failed two drug tests in just eight months, and Damon Stoudemire was the face of the Jail Blazers era of the Portland Trail Blazers.

Former Rookie of the Year was arrested three times for possession, each time being sillier than the last, and even the cops were already asking how he was still managing to get caught. The list goes on and on, with active players and retired players, which shows that Durant's opinion that "everyone does it" is pretty true.

The NBA is well ahead of its time compared to other major leagues. The NFL's CBA allowed marijuana use in the offseason. However, players are still prohibited from using it during the regular season. The MLB removed marijuana from its banned substances in the 2019 offseason. However, players can still be punished if they are caught under the influence during practice, games, meetings, or workouts.

One league that is pretty lenient with weed is the NHL. That doesn't really punish it, except if the players are caught with abnormally high levels in their urine. The player is sent to the league's Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health program. Still, the NHL won't know if they entered the program.

The NBA's decision to stohalifa reveals Kevin Durant as his favorite “weed” athletep testing for marijuana shows how much the league has evolved to align with its players and the culture around it. With stars like Durant openly advocating for cannabis and a long history of players embracing its use, the change feels like a natural progression.
