After rumors of a possible True Detective reunion have been swirling the internet, Woody Harrelson has decidedly taken away any and all glimmer of hope, saying there’s “not a chance” he would ever return to the popular series.
Season one follows detectives Rustin Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson) as they track down a sinister serial killer with occult connections. Fans of the 2014 crime anthology have been grinning ear to ear at the prospect of a season one revival. McConaughey has previously stated he would be more than happy to return as the gritty Louisiana detective. Sadly, his on-screen partner, Harrelson, does not share the sentiment. In an interview on NBC’s Today, the Now You See Me star shot down any chance of a Cohle and Hart reunion, saying it would risk tarnishing the show’s legacy.
“A lot of folks want to know if there will ever be another True Detective with you and Matthew McConaughey,” said Today co-host Dylan Dreyer. “[McConaughey] actually said he would be into it if ‘Woody and I think it’s good enough. It wouldn’t even be a choice.’ Would you do another one?”
“Matthew’s so funny,” said Harrelson. “In fairness, never. No chance… Because it turned out great. I love that it turned out the way it did, and if anything, doing another season would, I think, tarnish that.”
Original showrunner Nic Pizzolatto floated the idea of a season one continuation on the Nothing Left Unsaid podcast back in May of this year. According to Pizzolatto, the character-based concept would see the dynamic duo return to screen, that is, if the actors were up for it. Unfortunately for us, chances of seeing the titular buddy cop duo of Cohle and Hart return are looking pretty slim.
Fans of the show will not go empty-handed, though, as HBO is moving forward with a fifth season of True Detective. Details remain up in the air, but it’s largely speculated that Nicolas Cage will lead the cast. Season 5 is set to start filming in 2026 and is aiming for a 2027 release.
