It is common to learn about the lack of maintenance in former Olympic stadiums, which often results in abandoned, giant infrastructure. However, it is odd to hear about an active stadium catching a fire, let alone during a major competition.
Back in December, the Buffalo Bills’ new stadium, still under construction, caught fire. It wasn’t something serious, but it sent a message to constructors.
More recently, a huge fire broke out at a venue holding a world championship. The images were simply unbelievable.
On Thursday, NEXTA shared a series of videos and pictures of the Olympic Park Velodrome in Rio de Janeiro. The stadium’s roof caught fire during the Fencing World Championships. The fire broke out on Wednesday morning.

It prompted a major emergency response involving about 80 firefighters and 20 vehicles, according to authorities.
The blaze was largely confined to the venue’s fabric roof. There were no reported injuries, and the building’s interior remained untouched, the Associated Press reported.
Authorities launched an investigation into the incident. However, it is worth noting that the venue has a history of roof fires. Two similar blazes happened in 2017, both caused by falling paper sky lanterns.
Olympic Park Velodrome has served as a training base for Brazil’s national cycling and weightlifting teams after the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
