Following her victory at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, Alysa Liu is now being celebrated for another achievement.

The 20-year-old American figure skater first gained national attention at 13 as the youngest athlete to win the U.S. women’s figure skating title. She also made history as the first American woman to land a quadruple jump in international competition.

However, Liu retired at 16 after the 2022 Beijing Olympics because of intense pressure and burnout. After a two-year break, she returned to competition on her own terms and impressed the world. The U.S. skating star made an immediate impact by winning the Budapest Trophy in October 2024.

In March 2025, Liu claimed gold at the World Championships, the first American woman to win in 19 years. She continued her winning streak by capturing another gold medal at the Grand Prix Final in December 2025.

This set the stage for Liu’s successful comeback in Italy, where she won gold in the team and women’s singles events. Her victory gave the U.S. its first women’s singles Olympic title in 24 years and ended a two-decade women's individual medal drought in the sport.

To celebrate these achievements, Liu was announced as one of the trailblazing icons for the Olympics’ Women’s History Month campaign. On Instagram, the 2028 LA Olympic organizers shared a gallery of photos showcasing several talented women from the recent Winter Games.

The opening photo featured Liu waving to the crowd while proudly wearing her hard-won Olympic gold singles medal. The second photo captured her in a stunning spin on the Olympic rink.

“No one does it like them. ,” the Olympics wrote in the caption. “In honor of #WomensHistoryMonth, we’re celebrating the unstoppable athletes of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics who continue to redefine what’s possible on the world stage.”

Aside from Liu, other female athletes celebrated for their standout achievements include freestyle gold medalist Eileen Gu, hockey legend Marie-Philip Poulin, short-track star Arianna Fontana and the youngest snowboarding champion Choi Gaon.

Through their record-shattering performances and historic firsts, the organizers said, “these women have broken barriers, challenged expectations and inspired the next generation to dream big.”

Celebrated every March, Women’s History Month honors the vital contributions women have made to history and modern society. The celebration pays tribute to women who have inspired change, including athletes like Liu, whose achievements have redefined possibility.

By overcoming pressure and returning to competition, Liu proves that obstacles cannot stop a dedicated athlete from achieving historic success. Her comeback and gold medal victory show that early setbacks cannot stop those who persevere and pursue their dreams.
