Max Verstappen is arguably the best performing driver in Formula 1 right now. Despite McLaren’s dominance this year, the Red Bull star is salvaging the best result possible in a much slower car. This put Verstappen at the center of the silly season in the past few weeks. Though, the four-time world champion ultimately stayed at Red Bull. However, former F1 Supremo Bernie Ecclestone has now addressed claims of the Dutchman potentially joining Ferrari.
Scuderia Ferrari is seemingly in a crisis. The Italian team brought in Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes this year in hopes of turning around its fortunes. However, things have been nothing short of a disaster with the British driver failing to match expectations. So much so, Hamilton has even accepted that he is absolutely useless to the team.
Lewis Hamilton’s dismal run at Maranello has given rise to the possibility of Max Verstappen joining Ferrari. It is rumored that the four-time world champion could consider his options based on Red Bull’s position in the pecking order next season.
Bernie Ecclestone made it clear that if Max Verstappen decided to join Ferrari, it would simply be the end of his career in Formula 1. The 94-year-old did not explain why he would make such a drastic prediction. However, Ecclestone insisted that it would be far better for Verstappen if this did not happen.
If he goes to Ferrari, that would be the end of his career. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen.
Bernie Ecclestone told Sport.de
Ferrari does have a reputation of underachieving with star drivers, be it Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel, and now Lewis Hamilton. On the flip side, Bernie Ecclestone mentioned that at the end of the day, Max Verstappen can indeed build a winning team somewhere else if he desperately wanted to leave Red Bull.
He can always transform a good team into a winning team.
Bernie Ecclestone added
Lewis Hamilton has mentioned that Ferrari should start searching for his replacement. While these comments seem to have come due to frustration over race results, Bernie Ecclestone believes that it is time for Maranello to get its options clear.
Max Verstappen is undoubtedly the strongest driver on the grid, one any team would love to have. Though, Ecclestone asserted that the Scuderia would need to find a young driver. He insisted that someone like Gabriel Bortoleto or even Red Bull junior Isack Hadjar could be ideal as second drivers for Ferrari.
You have to choose an aspiring driver. I would take the Brazilian [Gabriel] Bortoleto, who I think will be very good, or Isack Hadjar Bortoleto does the job. Put him in the right car and you will see.
Bernie Ecclestone stated
Max Verstappen might not be a good fit for Maranello. The four-time world champion is a blunt racer who is never afraid to speak his mind, irrespective of the situation. Ferrari has had a history of controversies over its work culture and politics behind-the-scenes. Such a stressful working environment might not suit someone like Verstappen who just wants to focus on racing without having to deal with other issues.
