Valtteri Bottas is set to become Cadillac’s first Formula 1 driver, according to multiple reports. While nothing has been made official yet, the general expectation is that the Mercedes reserve will take one of their two seats.
There is talk that the team could confirm Bottas ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, which marks the return from the summer break. Once that happens, focus will shift to who fills the second spot.
Sergio Perez’s rumored move to Cadillac remains uncertain, a ccording to F1 presenter Juan Fossaroli on ESPN Fans’ YouTube channel.
Cadillac were reportedly surprised by claims they had already signed Perez, another race winner like Bottas. That suggests there may still be opportunities for other candidates in what remains a competitive race for seats.
Perez’s team is growing uneasy with the delays from Cadillac, and Fossaroli may have shed some light on why: they now appear to be considering Jak Crawford as an option.
Linked with Aston Martin, Crawford entered the summer break second in the F2 standings. In just 11 races this year, he has already exceeded his total podium finishes from his first two seasons, securing seven.
There was early speculation that Lowdon would look to sign an American driver for a team representing a Detroit-based brand. The 20-year-old prospect fits that profile more than anyone else currently on their radar, especially after Colton Herta dropped out of contention.
While Perez does offer significant commercial value, Fossaroli noted that bringing in Cr awford could be popular among fans and sponsors.
“Let’s say Bottas [is guaranteed]. Now they’re talking about Jak Crawford, the driver from the United States who’s in Formula 2.
“With a flagship team like Cadillac in the US, having a rookie driver would be good, as would having an experienced driver like Perez.
“Let’s wait. There are those who have been throwing bombs for months – if they aren’t confirmed, nobody says anything. For now, it’s a great option.”
Cadillac appear to be closing in on their 2026 Formula 1 line-up, according to reports by Juan Fossaroli, which indicate that the team has narrowed its focus to just three drivers. It now looks like Sergio Perez and Jak Crawford are the two leading candidates for the second seat.
This shift leaves several hopefuls on the outside looking in. Mick Schumacher had been optimistic about his chances, but he may have to settle for a reserve role instead.
Aston Martin reserve Felipe Drugovich, the 2022 Formula 2 champion, has again been overlooked, potentially requiring him to seek other options.
Zhou Guanyu was another candidate under consideration. Despite being managed by Graeme Lowdon and having past experience alongside Bottas, Zhou seems set to remain in a reserve role at Ferrari rather than securing a racing seat with Cadillac.
