Charles Leclerc remains one of the most respected drivers on the grid heading into 2026, and there is now growing talk about whether he might consider leaving Ferrari before his contract runs out.
Throughout 2025, Leclerc often managed to get more out of the SF-25 than seemed possible, giving Ferrari some rare highlights in an otherwise forgettable season. It was the team’s first winless campaign since 2021, and Leclerc was responsible for nearly all their bright spots.
Leclerc claimed all seven of Ferrari’s podium finishes this season, with second-place finishes in Monaco and Mexico City standing out. He also took third in Saudi Arabia, Spain, Austria, Belgium and the United States. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton’s best results after joining Ferrari were four fourth-place finishes.
Teams across the grid are keeping a close eye on what happens next. Leclerc has an exit clause that would allow him to leave after 2026 if Ferrari do not deliver a competitive car under the new regulations. Aston Martin, McLaren and Red Bull are all watching closely.
While recent rumours have linked the Monegasque driver with Aston Martin, McLaren and Red Bull moves in 2027, FunoAnalisiTecnica now reports he has told his manager to put any outside talks on hold. Right now, Ferrari remain Leclerc’s only focus.
Leclerc has been approached by other teams for several years now. But it is only in ‘the last few days’ that he has instructed Nicolas Todt not to entertain any offers while he focuses on helping Ferrari prepare for the new regulations coming into play in 2026.
The 28-year-old remains deeply committed to Ferrari, but the introduction of new engine, aerodynamic and chassis regulations next year will play a big part in shaping his long-term plans.
Leclerc’s choice to stick with Ferrari and focus on the upcoming 2026 regulations comes amid growing speculation about his future. Reports have noted McLaren’s interest, especially as questions begin to surface around Oscar Piastri’s long-term prospects with the team beyond next season.
Red Bull are also reportedly keeping an eye on Leclerc, should Max Verstappen decide to move on. The Dutchman’s situation remains uncertain beyond next year, and there are suggestions that Todt has already had early discussions with the Milton Keynes outfit regarding a possible switch in 2027.
Aston Martin have also made multiple enquiries about Leclerc through his agent, considering both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll are out of contract after next season. Although Leclerc is signed until 2029, a release clause does give him some flexibility if he chooses to use it.
For now, though, Aston Martin, McLaren and Red Bull may have to rely on Ferrari struggling under the new regulations if they hope to lure him away. If any one team gets out in front early, Leclerc worries that they could hold that edge for years.
