Red Bull announced the sacking of Team Principal Christian Horner with immediate effect on Wednesday. The 51-year-old had led the Austrian team in Formula 1 for the past twenty years. As Horner was shown the door by Milton Keynes, the Briton gave one heartfelt speech to his crew.
Christian Horner was disappointed to be axed by Red Bull Racing. F1 Presenter David Croft revealed that the Briton was simply blank when he left the team base in Milton Keynes for the last time. Horner led Red Bull ever since the team joined the sport in 2005, with a grand total of 14 world titles under his belt. He never missed a single race during his time as team principal.
In an emotional farewell speech, Christian Horner informed the Red Bull personnel that his services were no longer needed at the team, with this meeting being his last activity. The 51-year-old revealed that he was told of his exit just a day prior. Horner pointed out that he will continue to be under the payroll of Red Bull, without any hand in F1 operations. Perhaps, he will get a new role within the Red Bull family. Though, there has been no information about such a possibility just yet.
Yesterday I was informed by Red Bull that, operationally, I will no longer be involved with the business or the team moving forward from after this gathering. I will still remain employed by the company, but operationally, the baton will be handed over.
Christian Horner said, as broadcasted by Sky Sports F1
The former Red Bull boss admitted that he could not fathom his exit from the team he built in the past two decades. While Christian Horner reflected the situation, he realized that he could not leave without expressing his gratitude to the amazing team members at Milton Keynes. Horner wanted to share the news of his departure directly to the staff without any external noise, be it from the media or other figures at Red Bull.
That obviously came as a shock to myself, but what I’ve had time to do is to reflect over the last 12 hours or so. And I wanted to stand in front of all of you to break this news and just express my gratitude to each and every single member of the team that has given so much during the last 20 and a half years that I’ve been here.

Christian Horner was not the biggest name in the world of racing when he took the helms of Red Bull Racing. At 25, the Briton became the youngest team principal in Formula 1 at a time when the paddock did not take the energy drinks giant seriously. However, Horner managed to prove critics wrong. Not only did his team get to the front of the pack, but even emerged as a dominant force on the grid.
The 51-year-old recalled the time he first visited the Milton Keynes base after Red Bull had acquired Jaguar’s struggling F1 operations in 2005. Christian Horner claimed that the entire crew welcomed him with open arms. What started as a small operation in two buildings at Milton Keynes, turned into one of the most successful teams in the history of Formula 1. Horner asserted that being part of this journey had been the biggest privilege of his life.
When I arrived 20 years ago, with a few less grey hairs, I walked into the team, I didn’t know what to expect, but I was immediately welcomed. And out of two rundown buildings, we started to build what became a powerhouse in Formula 1. Watching and being part of this team has been the biggest privilege in my life.
Christian Horner explained
Certainly, Christian Horner seems to still be struggling to understand the decision made by Red Bull. The Briton was reportedly not informed about the reason for his sacking. However, tensions within Milton Keynes were no secret in the paddock. It is likely that Horner ran out of steam after months of a power struggle. While Laurent Mekies replaces him as CEO, it is unclear where the 51-year-old is headed for the future.
