Ferrari has endured a challenging time throughout the 2025 season. Both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have failed to achieve any notable results or race wins since the beginning of the year. As the team hopes to come out of the desperate slump, the 2009 F1 champion Jenson Button reveals the reasons behind the issues and why they haven’t been fixed yet.
Lewis Hamilton did not hesitate to accept the unexpected issues he faced at Ferrari. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc was simply unable to perform well in the challenger developed by the team. This caused Maranello to lose out on the runner-up spot in the constructors’ standings to Mercedes. Now, the team is also at a threat of losing their P3 spot to Red Bull if they do not pull it together.
Jenson Button pondered over the reasons behind Ferrari’s extreme struggles and recent failures of recent. Button insisted that a team did not need to be afraid to fail, and this was how it felt at Ferrari. The team was so loved and preached that people were ready to join at any given time, under any circumstances. The 2009 Champion reckoned that people feared being pushed out the door easily, and it wasn’t a good feeling.
You can’t be afraid to fail. And that’s what it feels like at Ferrari. I think everyone feels it’s easy to be pushed out the door, and it’s not a nice feeling to have,
Jenson Button told Sky Sports F1.
Further, Jenson Button asserted that the team needed consistency throughout the team. The drivers needed confidence, and so did the crew members. As such, Button hoped that this wasn’t the case next year and the employees would be much at peace as compared to this season. The Briton hoped that the employees stayed with the team the entire year and finished 24 races with the same team without the fear of being fired.
You need to have consistency throughout the team. It gives everyone confidence, and the drivers confidence. So I hope that’s not the case next year. I hope that they see out the whole year together, because there’s going to be so much change for the first race, but also the 24th race of next year.
Jenson Button added.
McLaren has clearly remained the most dominant team on the grid and has already lifted the constructors’ championship against its rivals. Ferrari has also made multiple blunders in race strategy, which have caused their ultimate downfall on the track. As such, Jenson Button reveals the areas where Maranello failed to close the gap to the McLarens and failed in terms of results on track.
Jenson Button acknowledged that the 2025 season wasn’t going as Ferrari had hoped. Lewis Hamilton entered the team with great hopes of fighting for his eighth title with the team, but has failed to do so. As such, Maranello hadn’t put forth its best results this year, and it proved to be the reason behind its failures. Button highlighted that Ferrari did not fight McLaren with consistency, except only Max Verstappen.
It’s not been the season that they would have hoped [for]. Obviously, Lewis going to Ferrari, was expecting great things in 2025, and you always think, as a driver, that you can make the difference. But in this sport, you’re up against the best. So, it’s not been the best, but it hasn’t been horrific either. They just haven’t been consistently fighting the McLarens, but no one has. The only other person that has really, on a few occasions, is one individual, Max Verstappen.
Jenson Button noted.
The 2025 season still has six races left, and Ferrari can still salvage some points left in the season and finish in P3 in the constructors’ championship. Charles Leclerc is still mathematically in contention for the driver’s title. But, it would be next to impossible to cover the 163-point deficit to the lead. As such, the team would hope for a much better outing in the upcoming season, or people will start to lose faith in the constructor.
