Christian Horner‘s sudden axe from Red Bull is the hot topic in the Formula 1 paddock currently. Milton Keynes suffered from extreme performance struggles as the directors at the Red Bull GmbH started losing hope in Horner to lead the team. Now, with the 51-year-old gone, the Austrian outfit will have to work even harder as Laurent Mekies takes the reins. Bernie Ecclestone has shared his opinion on the energy drink giant’s current state following the Briton’s exit from the team.

Red Bull had not let anyone get wind of Christian Horner‘s sacking as the news hit the paddock out of nowhere. Max Verstappen and Co. were accused of trying to axe Horner from the team in order to revive their pace previously. However, the 51-year-old’s work within the constructor for the past 20 years was all gone in a moment. Upon this, Bernie Ecclestone berated the situation and pointed out that the team could’ve let go of its boss much easier than this.

Bernie Ecclestone, who was as clueless as every other Formula 1 entity, guessed that the situation must be very serious in the team for them to come to this decision. The 94-year-old recalled that he had just had a chat with Horner a few days before, as the latter did not mention anything about being sacked. Ecclestone asserted that the 51-year-old would have surely told him if he had any idea about this situation being brewed up at Milton Keynes.

It must be something very serious, in my opinion, I spoke to him the day before [on Monday] and he didn’t know. Well, he might have known, but he didn’t tell me. It was a normal conversation. We were talking about Max. Nothing to do with this, otherwise he would have told me.

Bernie Ecclestone told Racingnews365.com

Ecclestone asserted that he did not understand why Red Bull would fire Christian Horner with ‘immediate effect’ when the situation wasn’t even that bad. The 94-year-old joked that firing him so suddenly begged the question of whether he had murdered somebody. The Supremo reckoned that Milton Keynes should have had a chat with the 51-year-old and informed him of the situation, and explained the entire scenario before abruptly ending his contract with the team.

It’s the effective immediately I don’t understand. Why would they ask him to leave with immediate effect? It’s like he’s murdered somebody. You can understand, if you’re going to fire somebody, then you’d have a chat before and you’d come out with something like, ‘We’ve agreed to part company’, or something.

Bernie Ecclestone hints Christian Horner ‘did something drastic’

Red Bull did not provide much explanation behind Christian Horner’s exit from the team. However, some sources claimed that the team wanted a more distributed leadership within the team as Horner hogged all the roles before. Still, the 51-year-old’s work for the Austrian outfit couldn’t be easily replicated by any other new team principal. Hence, Bernie Ecclestone reckoned that the Briton must have done something drastic in order to warrant such a reaction from Milton Keynes.

Bernie Ecclestone pointed out that Red Bull came to their decision because of Christian Horner doing something horribly wrong. Still, for the sake of Horner, Ecclestone noted that the former was fired due to executives behind unhappy with the team’s results in F1. Still, the 94-year-old reiterated that being sacked so out of the blue was a completely different situation altogether.

But to come out and say, ‘You’re fired with immediate effect’, he must have done something a bit drastic for that to happen. Let’s assume they were unhappy with the results, which I can understand, that’s one thing, but to be fired immediately, that’s a different thing altogether.

Bernie Ecclestone noted

The 2025 season is already halfway over, as Red Bull doesn’t seem to be in the mix for winning either of the championships. Max Verstappen, despite giving it his all, is trailing the championship lead by 69 points with crushing hopes of fighting for the title by the end. Now, time will tell if the Austrian outfit regains its dominant form as early as the 2026 season, as they hope to retain the reigning world champion with them.
