Ex-F1 team owner recalls Bernie Ecclestone’s ‘pet hate’ amidst Fernando Alonso’s Australian GP penalty
Lucas Peltier-USA TODAY Sports

The Australian GP was the most exciting race of the 2024 F1 season so far. Carlos Sainz came home to win the Grand Prix with a Ferrari 1-2 while Max Verstappen retired from the race. However, George Russell‘s last lap crash has sparked controversy following Fernando Alonso ‘s penalty for the incident. Now, former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan has recalled Bernie Ecclestone ‘s frustrations over post-race penalties.

Fernando Alonso was handed a 20-second time penalty after the race. This dropped the two-time world champion to eighth place. Eddie Jordan claimed that he always gets upset whenever a driver is penalized post-race. The Irishman cited the root cause of this frustration to be Alonso’s drop in the race classification.

I really get so upset when I watch a race, and I think Alonso has finished fifth, or whatever it is, and then he’s demoted three places. Eddie Jordan said on the Formula For Success Podcast (H&T: RacingNews365)

Moreover, Jordan revealed how ex-F1 Supremo Bernie Ecclestone despised such decisions. The 76-year-old claimed that this was Ecclestone’s ‘pet hate.’ So much so that the 93-year-old would instruct stewards to not give him a classification an hour after the race with different results.

I remember Bernie [Ecclestone], it was one of his pet hates. He’d say to the timekeepers and the stewards, ‘Never give me a set of results 30 minutes or an hour after the race with a different set of positions. Eddie Jordan explained

Eddie Jordan reckoned that the Briton found such penalties to be unfair to viewers on television and everyone in the paddock. Moreover, Bernie Ecclestone believed that such decisions ended up confusing the entire grid about the results.

[Because] it’s not fair on the television, it’s not fair on anyone and it confuses the crap out of everybody.' Eddie Jordan continued

Eddie Jordan urges F1 to ‘get a grip’ after Fernando Alonso’s penalty

Jordan claimed that instead of giving time penalties after the race, race control could instead impose grid penalties for the following round of the season. The Irishman emphasized that the stewards should not take away Fernando Alonso’s race position. The former team owner went as far as labeling it as ‘nonsense.’

And in my opinion, if they felt something was wrong, they should have said, ‘You’ve got a two-place grid position penalty at the next race’. But don’t take the race position from him. Why the hell should they do that? It’s nonsense. Eddie Jordan asserted

The 76-year-old was furious over the time-penalty. Eddie Jordan slammed Formula 1 to get a grip and put an end to such decisions. The Irishman affirmed that race results should stay as race results. With any penalties being imposed in the future instead.

For heaven’s sake, Formula 1, will you get a grip! The race results are the race results. And if there are penalties, they come in the future. Eddie Jordan concluded

Eddie Jordan has expressed his anger over Fernando Alonso’s time penalty at the Australian GP. The two-time world champion lost on some crucial points for Aston Martin due to the post-race decision made by the stewards. However, it remains to be seen if race control decides to change the nature of penalties imposed after the end of a race.
