The fallout from the 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix isn’t over for Yuki Tsunoda. While the Red Bull driver served a five-second time penalty during the race, the Formula 1 governing body, FIA, has now issued additional punishment following a post-race review of the incident.
According to the FIA’s official report, Tsunoda has also been handed one penalty point on his Super Licence, bringing his total to eight points in the current 12-month period.
The incident occurred on Lap 53 as Lando Norris (Car 4) attempted an overtake on Tsunoda (Car 22).
The stewards determined that the Japanese driver made “more than one change of direction to defend his position,” violating Appendix L, Chapter IV, Article 2(b) of the International Sporting Code, which restricts drivers from making multiple blocking moves while defending.

The move forced the attacking car (Norris) off the track to avoid contact, and Tsunoda was issued an in-race 5-second time penalty.
After reviewing onboard footage, team radio, and in-car video evidence, the stewards concluded that the defensive manoeuvre also “effectively forced Car 4 [Norris] off the track,” reinforcing the seriousness of the infringement.
As a result, Tsunoda received:

The stewards also reminded Red Bull that they retain the right to appeal under Article 15 of the FIA International Sporting Code and Chapter 4 of the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules.
Penalty points remain active for 12 months, and Tsunoda now accumulates eight, placing him uncomfortably close to the 12-point limit that would trigger an automatic race ban.
With Red Bull’s 2026 lineup finalized, the 25-year-old is set to vacate his seat for Isack Hadjar and transition into a reserve role next season. That shift means Tsunoda will have fewer racing opportunities, making every potential call-up even more critical.
In summary, any additional penalties could jeopardize the limited track time he’ll receive in his new position.
For now, the Abu Dhabi GP leaves Tsunoda with a costly takeaway: his defensive move not only earned an in-race penalty, but it also moved him closer to a possible suspension during a year when his chances to compete will already be limited.
