Fernando Alonso admits holding talks with other teams before ‘logical’ Aston Martin extension

Fernando Alonso ‘s contract with Aston Martin was set to expire at the end of this year. Amidst a busy driver market courtesy of Lewis Hamilton ‘s Ferrari move, the 42-year-old was rumored to be in contention for multiple seats on the grid. However, the two-time world champion decided to extend his stay with the Silverstone-based squad. Now, Alonso has admitted having discussions with rival teams before signing his new deal.

The Spanish driver signed a two-year extension with Aston Martin. Fernando Alonso claimed that he talked to other teams which was normal for drivers who were looking for a new deal. The two-time world champion highlighted that he wanted to see developing market and hear proposals from different outfits. Alonso was rumored to be one of the candidates to replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes or even Red Bull’s Sergio Perez.

I have spoken to other teams, it is normal when you enter into a negotiation. You need to take stock, know how the market is and also listen to everyone, listen to all the proposals, see how the market moves. Fernando Alonso said, as reported by SoyMotor

The two-time world champion affirmed that staying at Aston Martin was the logical decision. Alonso claimed that he felt most loved by the Silverstone-based team. Fernando Alonso highlighted that his discussions with rivals failed to come to conclusion. As it would have taken a lot more time to finalize such a switch.

In my head, Aston was the logical decision. In the end it was for the best. It is where I have felt most loved after all the conversations. The other conversations were light and did not reach conclusions, or more time was needed.

Formula 1 will introduce the new regulations in 2026 which could shake-up the pecking order. 2026 will be an important year for Aston Martin. As the Silverstone-based squad would finally become a works team in partnership with Honda. This would allow Fernando Alonso’s team to finally match the likes of Mercedes and Ferrari in terms of resources.

Moreover, Fernando Alonso claimed that a one-year extension with the British team would not have made sense. The two-time world champion informed Aston Martin from the beginning that he was only interested in a multi-year deal. Alonso further mentioned that he saw the desire to work together from the British squad which ultimately made him sign a new deal.

Having a one-year project made no sense to me. I made it very clear to Aston Martin in the first conversations that the attractiveness of this project is everything we are building. Fernando Alonso stated

Certainly, Fernando Alonso has high ambitions for his future with Aston Martin. The 42-year-old will be hoping to fight for the world title in 2026 for the Silverstone squad to fulfill his desire of a third world championship. However, the Spanish driver remains focused on trying to secure some good results for the British team this season.
