The FOM’s broadcasting of the Singapore GP was criticized by multiple drivers as the live broadcast failed to showcase some crucial race moments. Rather, the live coverage focused on showing drivers’ partners and other celebrities. Carlos Sainz was at the center of the criticism as his charge from P18 to P10 wasn’t broadcast on TV. Now, even Fernando Alonso joins his fellow Spaniard and berates the FOM’s live stream of the race.
Carlos Sainz lashed out at the entire broadcasting of the Singapore GP and how they showcased the driver’s partners more than actual racing action. An FOM spokesperson responded to these claims from the Spaniard and noted that the team did a great job of balancing the racing moments and celebrities showcased on TV.
While the live streaming was poor, the media company decided to broadcast Fernando Alonso‘s heated radio comments against Lewis Hamilton in the final stages of the race. Fernando Alonso dropped multiple F-bombs and asserted that he couldn’t believe whatever Lewis Hamilton was doing.
The latter even took a hilarious dig at Alonso on social media later, but the Asturian insisted that the radio comments did not need to be broadcast for everyone to see. The 44-year-old blasted the FOM for the ‘unnecessary’ and poor broadcast choices, especially the radio chatter.
Further, Fernando Alonso continued that the radio comments were misunderstood by the viewers a majority of the time, as they were private conversations between the driver and the race engineer. As such, the FOM only broadcast parts of the conversation, and hence caused unnecessary chaos and drama between the drivers when it wasn’t even called for.
Unnecessary sometimes, poorly broadcast and chosen by the one choosing which radios to broadcast. Misunderstood 99.9% of the time because they are private conversations with your engineer or your team that maybe you went through on Sunday morning in the strategy meeting. So you have alternative plans on the strategy that, obviously, when you only broadcast one sentence, it’s impossible to understand at home and the repercussion that it has.
Fernando Alonso said via RacingNews365.
The Singapore GP had a lack of racing action at the forefront, but the middle pack was relatively competitive among the drivers. However, the live broadcast barely covered these racing moments, but it showcased the radio comments between them. As such, Fernando Alonso wasn’t too impressed with the broadcast prioritizing showcasing the protagonist of the race more than everyone combined.
Fernando Alonso insisted that when the broadcast focused on the radio comments of the protagonist of the race, it was very sad as well. Alonso pointed out that the race was very poor in entertainment, and hence the FOM had to resort to such moments to make it seem exciting. As such, this was something that the sport needed to fix as well to make the races and their broadcast even more enjoyable for the viewers.
But, yeah, sometimes when the radio broadcast is the protagonist of the race, that also is very sad, that the race was so poor in terms of entertainment, So, yeah, that’s something we need to improve all as a group in the sport.
Fernando Alonso noted.
The FOM has definitely taken note of all the backlash and criticism on the coverage. The sport has definitely been growing massively in recent years, and must listen to the feedback with utter seriousness. Hence, time will tell about how the coming races play out in terms of entertainment and live coverage by Liberty Media.
