Formula E races in Berlin, Germany, on July 12 and 13 as a double-header race at Tempelhof Airport in Season 11.
Championship leader Oliver Rowland had a bad race in Jakarta as he only scored one point. However, he still has a commanding lead of 172 points, which is 69 ahead of his next challenger.
Therefore, the Brit will not be too worried as he was bound to have a bad weekend at some point in the season.
He performed quite well in Berlin in 2024, scoring a third-place finish in both races, which he hopes to repeat. Prior to this, he had a podium in Berlin in 2021 as he finished in second place behind his current teammate, Norman Nato.
Rowland also won at this track back in 2020, when they drove in Berlin six times that year due to the pandemic.
All these results show that he will likely head into this race weekend with confidence.
Dan Ticktum scored his maiden win in Jakarta and has been gaining momentum as the season has progressed. This confidence will probably continue in Berlin as he knows he is capable of great results.
However, the Brit has not had a great track record at this circuit, only scoring in the points once here in 2023. Despite this, Ticktum’s familiarity with this race track will help him perform well since it’s not new to him.
The Cupra Kiro driver has had his best season to date, regularly finishing in the points throughout the year. Furthermore, he really began to impress everyone when he scored his maiden podium in Tokyo.
Therefore, Ticktum will hope that this great run of results will only continue as the season nears its end.
Felipe Drugovich will be filling in for Nyck de Vries who is racing in the 6 Hours of São Paulo (Brazil) for WEC.
Drugovich has had a quite successful junior career and he won the Euroformula Open and F2 Championship.
The Brazilian has tested in Formula E before, so this will not be completely foreign to him, but nonetheless still a challenge. In particular, he participated in the last two Formula E Rookie Tests at the same venue, and topped the times in 2023.
Additionally, he tested for Mahindra in Spain earlier this year which allowed him to gain crucial mileage in the GEN3 Evo car.
All this shows that the team have prepared him as best as they can, which will greatly help the 25-year-old in Berlin.
Since Formula E is often unpredictable, Drugovich could get himself into the points, but he will need to work hard to achieve this.
He could either perform similarly to rookies Taylor Barnard (who is fourth in the championship) or Zane Maloney and David Beckmann (who have both not scored points this year).
As Berlin is the penultimate round of Season 11, the Drivers’ World Championship could wrap up this weekend.
Rowland has had a fantastic season at Nissan, with seven podiums in the first nine races, gaining him big points. He did not perform as well in the last three races, but his dominance early on saw him create a big gap to his rivals.
Both Porsche drivers have tried their best to close this gap, but have also faced their own challenges this year.
Therefore, the Brit needs a lead of 87 points over Pascal Wehrlein after Saturday’s race to take the title on races won. However, if he fails to do so, he needs a 58-point lead after Sunday if he wants to secure the trophy in Berlin.
Realistically, Rowland’s only challengers at this point in the season are Wehrlein, Antonio Felix da Costa and Barnard.
It seems very likely that Rowland will become the Drivers’ World Champion, but whether he achieves this in Berlin or London is uncertain.
New and upcoming drivers will get a chance to experience the GEN3 Evo car in the mandatory Monday Rookie test on July 14.
All 11 teams must choose two rookies (someone who hasn’t participated in an E-Prix before) who will get a full day of testing around Tempelhof.
This is a huge opportunity – as well as a data gathering session – for drivers to get a seat in Formula E if they perform well.
Whilst some of these drivers have tested for Formula E teams before, for others it will be their first time driving this electric race car.
Here is who is confirmed for the 2025 Berlin Rookie Test so far:
All 11 Formula E teams will be eager to visit Berlin and race in this all-electric motorsport for the penultimate time this year.
