Max Verstappen is at the center of attention in the Formula 1 paddock. Rumors over the four-time world champion’s future in the sport have continued to surface in the past few weeks. So far, Red Bull maintained that things were going as planned with Verstappen’s contract that extends till the end of 2028. However, Red Bull Motorsport Consultant Dr. Helmut Marko has finally spoken up on recent speculation.

Mercedes’ interest in Max Verstappen has been no secret. Since last season, the Silver Arrows have shown direct interest in the Dutch driver. Though, nothing materialized last year, the rumors have only increased this time around. So much so, it is believed that Verstappen has made up his mind to ditch Milton Keynes for Brackley next year.

Publicly, the reigning world champion has stood firmly on his stance that he wants to remain at Red Bull. The 27-year-old went as far as claiming that he wants to finish off his F1 career with the Austrian team. Though, there is no smoke without fire. Tensions between Verstappen’s camp and the team have remained prevalent, which might force the Dutchman to consider his options.

Helmut Marko, who previously admitted that Max Verstappen does have an exit clause in his Red Bull contract, spoke up on the rumors. The 82-year-old acknowledged the possibility that the reigning world champion might have started negotiations with Mercedes over a potential switch next year. Though, the Red Bull advisor insisted that for now, there were no developments on the status quo, hinting that Verstappen was set to remain at Milton Keynes.

He could be negotiating [with Mercedes], but there are no current developments.

Helmut Marko gives up on Max Verstappen’s 2025 title chances

Max Verstappen dominated Formula 1 in the past couple of years. The 27-year-old bagged four consecutive world titles in a row, and shattered several records in the ground-effect era. Fans hoped to see the Dutchman continue his dominant streak this year with a fifth championship. Unfortunately, Red Bull has failed to keep up with the competition, as McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris have continued to outperform Verstappen.

The four-time world champion sits in third place in the standings, with only two race wins to his name so far. Helmut Marko gave an honest outlook over the championship battle. He admitted that Max Verstappen really had no chance of securing a fifth title in a row. The Austrian reckoned that it was now just a fight between Norris and Piastri for the championship. This opinion is shared by Verstappen who claimed that his results don’t matter after the British GP.

The world championship is over. It’s now just between Norris and Piastri, although Norris has made an impressive comeback with two sensational races.

Helmut Marko added

Certainly, the 2025 season has turned into a disaster for Max Verstappen and Red Bull. The 27-year-old has managed to tolerate the issues for now. However, Verstappen is not a driver who is willing to keep struggling in the field. The Dutchman has no shortage of options if he decides to leave Milton Keynes. The next couple of weeks will be crucial in understanding the plans of the reigning world champion. Though, Red Bull will be in massive trouble if it loses its star driver for next year.
