Helmut Marko claims Fernando Alonso didn’t think Red Bull could ‘compete for world championships’ in F1

The Red Bull Team Advisor, Helmut Marko has sung in praise of F1 veteran, Fernando Alonso and has applauded the Spaniard’s performance and longevity in the sport. Alonso has been a very competent driver on the grid for the past 23 years and has continued to excel as a racing driver.

Helmut Marko has opened up about a potential move for Fernando Alonso during the early years of Red Bull Racing when the latter was at the peak of his career. The Spaniard has two driver’s championships to his name and has rejuvenated his form from the 2023 season onward.

Marko has also revealed a particular disinterest from Alonso during the time of negotiations, as the Spanish driver had some doubts over the capabilities of Red Bull.

Well, we were talking to Alonso in the early years of Red Bull Racing . I don't think he thought we were capable of manufacturing cars that could compete to win world championships. And that didn't work out. Helmut Marko said in an interview with Formel1

The Christian Horner-led team has been at the top of their game since the 2021 season and has been the outfit to beat. However, the 42-year-old was critical of the team’s ability to build a car worthy of winning a world championship back in the day and, hence, was not willing to join the outfit.

RB driver voices hopes of racing for Red Bull in place of Sergio Perez

Visa Cash App RB driver, Yuki Tsunoda has spoken about his ambitions to race for Red Bull next season as Sergio Perez runs out of contract at the end of this year. Tsunoda has been promising for RB and hopes for a promotion to the Austrian giants.

Always as a driver, you want to be in the team that the car is performing well and obviously Red Bull has the best car in the grid Yuki Tsunoda told the Sky Sports F1 podcast.

Red Bull has been in form again this season, with the RB20 being one of the fastest cars. Tsunoda has since shown his interest in racing for top-tier teams, as he too dreams of winning a driver’s championship. However, Perez has also shown promise this season and is rumored to have been offered a new contract at Red Bull.

Yuki Tsunoda now has a point to prove, as the Japanese driver will look to give it his all in order to secure a seat in one of the top teams for the upcoming years. Next up on the F1 calendar is the Monaco Grand Prix, a race that will give the RB driver another chance to show his worth.
