The Mexico GP was one of the more controversial races from the FIA and the race control point of view. The final laps of the race saw an awkward virtual safety car deployment that cost Max Verstappen his P2 finish against Charles Leclerc.

Moreover, at the beginning of the race, Liam Lawson narrowly avoided hitting stewards following a small incident on track. The Kiwi was left startled after barely avoiding a major accident from taking place.

The start of the Mexico GP was a bit chaotic as multiple drivers collided and left debris on the track. Liam Lawson had to pit early due to the said incident and had to rejoin the track. At around Lap 3, the stewards were picking off the debris from the track while the race was being run under normal conditions. Lawson did not anticipate the stewards being so close and could have crashed into them.

At around Lap 3, the incident occurred when Liam Lawson narrowly avoided hitting the track marshals. Lawson was taking a blind turn and wasn’t aware of what was happening after the turn. He did not expect two race marshals running across the track. As such, the Kiwi was left surprised and startled after almost crashing into the people on the track.

Immediately after, Liam Lawson lashed out on the team radio about the possible collision. The Kiwi questioned if the race marshals were joking or playing a prank. Lawson asked his race engineer if he saw the situation. The Racing Bulls driver then asserted that he could have killed someone on track and ended the race under much worse and darker situations.

Are you kidding me? Did you just see that? I could have… killed them.

Liam Lawson said on the team radio.

Liam Lawson claims such situations ‘completely unacceptable’

Formula 1 drivers crashing into people on track is unseen and very rare. However, there have been some instances in the past of colliding with people on the track. Despite modern safety precautions, such incidents are never impossible to take place and can happen at any given point in time. As such, Liam Lawson criticized the situation and called out race control for the unacceptable conditions at the Mexico GP.

After the race, Liam Lawson asserted that he couldn’t believe what he was seeing on track. He recalled the incident and how he was coming out of the pits and turned on the first turn and saw two marshals running across the track.

Lawson insisted that he nearly hit one of them, and the situation was very dangerous. As such, the Kiwi pointed out that such miscommunications and situations should not ever happen, as they were completely unacceptable.

I honestly couldn’t believe what I was seeing.[I] came out on a new set of hards [tyres], and then I got to Turn One and there were just two dudes running across the track. I nearly hit one of them, honestly, it was so dangerous. Obviously there’s been a miscommunication somewhere but I’ve never experienced that before, and I haven’t really seen that in the past. It’s pretty unacceptable.

Liam Lawson said via BBC.

The Mexico GP was certainly one of the more controversial ones, as the final lap virtual safety car was uncalled for as well. The race control will once again have to take feedback from the teams and drivers and ensure that decisions are taken for the safety of all, while still allowing for racing action on track. Liam Lawson suffered from a DNF following the crash despite pitting on Lap 3 and suffered from a disappointing end to his race.
