Lando Norris has failed to trump Oscar Piastri in the driver’s standings yet. With just nine races to go, Norris is trailing the lead by 34 points to Piastri. The 25-year-old has suffered from a series of woeful consequences that his cost him heavily in the championship ambitions. As such, with the season finale closing in, the Briton opens up on potentially losing the title to his Australian counterpart.
McLaren has declared that it would not intervene with team orders or ‘Papaya Rules’ amid Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri fighting for the title. Piastri had already insisted that he would race Norris hard this season after losing out to his teammate in the last season because of the team orders. As such, the Aussie has managed to hold onto his lead in the driver’s title as the 2025 season nears completion.
Lando Norris is now accepting of the possibility of losing the driver’s title to Oscar Piastri, despite the latter being in his third year in Formula 1. Norris pointed out that if, in the end, Piastri emerges victorious after doing a better job on the track, the former wouldn’t be against it. Rather, the Briton would give credit to the 24-year-old and accept that his teammate did a better job than him. The 25-year-old insisted that he was like this and did not wish poor things upon his Aussie counterpart.
No, because in the end, if he’s done a better job, I give credit to him and I say he’s done a better job. That’s just how I am. I don’t wish it [upon him].
Lando Norris said, as reported by motorsport.com
Further, Lando Norris made a ‘may the best driver win’ remark on being questioned about his title battle with Oscar Piastri. Currently, it seems that Piastri might hold onto his championship lead and emerge victorious in the title battle. If the Australian wins the title, Norris pointed out that he wouldn’t be demotivated by it; rather, he would respect the situation and congratulate the 24-year-old on his achievement.
May the best driver win, and if that’s the case at the end of the season then I’ll respect that.
Lando Norris added
It would be too soon to write off Lando Norris’ chances to emerge victorious in the driver’s title this year, despite him losing a lot of running in the races. Norris has made crucial mistakes on track that caused him to DNF and lose massive points in the standings. However, the season still has nine races, and even Oscar Piastri doesn’t want to consider himself the winner just yet.
Lando Norris insisted that he could still win the championship by the end of the season, and for that, he did not need something bad to happen to Oscar Piastri and his performances. Norris pointed out that he wished to win his maiden driver’s title the right way, without putting anyone else at a loss. However, the Briton did accept that it would make his life easier if there were a couple of drivers between him and the Aussie on track.
I can still win the championship without anything happening and that’s the way I wish to do it. It would certainly make my life easier if there were just some more drivers in between every now and then.
Lando Norris noted
The 2025 season has peaked in excitement and competition, especially between the two McLaren drivers in Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. The Briton still has a long mountain to climb if he wants to seriously win the title by the end of the season. However, Piastri is not going to make life any easier for the 25-year-old until the very end.
