The weekend is officially underway at Monza, F1’s legendary “Temple of Speed” for the 2025 Italian Grand Prix, and the first day was good for both Ferrari and McLaren.
The first day at Monza saw the Italian tifosi get exactly what they wanted in FP1, as Ferrari put two cars in the top spot. Lewis Hamilton topped the chart with a 1:20.117, just ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc at 0.169 seconds behind.
Carlos Sainz was third for Williams, and to the surprise of Max Verstappen, he could only manage fourth after he struggled with grip on both the mediums and softs throughout the session.
The session was red-flagged briefly when Isack Hadjar dragged gravel onto the track at Ascari but Ferrari’s momentum remained unbroken going into the afternoon.
FP1 Results:
In FP2 the picture changed dramatically as McLaren came alive. Lando Norris set the pace with a 1:19.878, just 0.083s ahead of Leclerc, while Sainz was third again. Oscar Piastri was fourth and Hamilton fifth. Verstappen was sixth, still struggling with balance issues and two tenths off the top three.
There was some action in the session. Local hero Kimi Antonelli spun at Lesmo 2 and beached his Mercedes in the gravel, triggering a red flag.

Earlier both McLarens had loose mirrors and Pierre Gasly had an off at Ascari that added more gravel to the racing line. Hamilton had intermittent power loss on the run between Turns 6 and 7 and Leclerc had “no grip at all” on his first soft-tyre push before finding speed later in the session.
Norris, though, left the paddock content. “We’ve still got a few things to improve,” he admitted, “but it’s good we’re at the top.” Piastri was also positive, “plenty to work on but we’re happy with the baseline”.
Ferrari looked to have good single lap pace and long run pace, and the time by Hamilton in FP1 and Leclerc’s consistency in FP2 are promising for qualifying.
FP2 Results:
The Qualifying session for the 2025 Italian Grand Prix is this Saturday at 10:00 AM ET / 7:00 AM PT, and will be a three part session (Q1, Q2, Q3) lasting for roughly an hour.
In the US you can watch live on ESPN2, or stream it via FuboTV, Sling TV, YouTube TV and Hulu.
Ferrari will hope to put on a show for the Tifosi after a strong FP1, McLaren will look to keep the momentum going from FP2 where Lando Norris was quickest, meanwhile all the others drivers will be trying to turn their pace into a good grid position.
