Jenson Button claims Carlos Sainz doing the ‘right thing’ by not taking up Audi’s offer for 2025
Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports

Carlos Sainz became the major talking point of the F1 paddock after Ferrari decided to replace the Spaniard with Lewis Hamilton for 2025. The 29-year-old currently has no contract for the upcoming season. However, Audi has tried to target Sainz in recent months. Now, former F1 champion Jenson Button reckoned that it was better for the Ferrari driver to not join the German carmaker.

Button highlighted that Carlos Sainz was at a point in his career when he has been in the sport for almost a decade. The 29-year-old made his F1 debut in 2015 alongside Max Verstappen at Toro Rosso (now RB). However, the Spanish driver is yet to get a chance to compete for the world title.

He’s [Carlos Sainz] in a position in his career where he’s been around for a little while now. Jenson Button stated

Moreover, Jenson Button claimed that Sainz did not want to wait another three or four years for Audi to become competitive. Presently, the Sauber-run Stake F1 team is struggling to even match the likes of Haas. As such, it would take some time before the German carmaker could become a front runner on the grid. Subsequently, Button affirmed that Carlos Sainz was making the right call by not taking up Audi’s offer.

He doesn’t want to wait for another 3-4 years to be in a seat at Audi that could be competitive, so I think he’s doing the right thing. Jenson Button explained

Jenson Button claims Carlos Sainz must take ‘risks’

Audi might be the easiest option for Carlos Sainz at the moment. However, Red Bull and Mercedes have expressed interest in signing the 29-year-old. Recently, former F1 star Juan Pablo Montoya claimed that Sainz would be the ideal choice for Milton Keynes if Max Verstappen decided to leave the team.

Jenson Button pointed out that Carlos Sainz needed to take risks in his career. The 2009 world champion reckoned it would be better if the Spanish driver waited it out to potentially sign with Red Bull or Mercedes for next season. Although, Sainz has not directly acknowledged such rumors.

So I think he has to take risks, but I think waiting it out and maybe getting a Red Bull seat or maybe getting a Mercedes seat is the direction he needs to take. Jenson Button asserted

Certainly, Carlos Sainz needs to find a competitive seat for 2025. The 29-year-old must sign a contract with a top team in case Audi decides to look somewhere else. As such, despite showing brilliant performances this season, Sainz’s career could be at jeopardy if the Spaniard does make a decision on his future soon.
