Oscar Piastri seemingly isn’t the championship favorite anymore as Lando Norris and Max Verstappen look strong in their performances. Piastri’s massive lead over the rivals has been cut short in the recent races, and he is leading the title with just 16 points over Norris. Even Verstappen is just 40 points adrift of the lead. As such, the 2009 F1 champion Jenson Button reveals how the Aussie’s negativity could cause him to lose the title.
Max Verstappen‘s sudden resurgence in performance has helped him cut down the 100+ point disparity to just 40 points in the matter of a few races. Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri has suffered from a streak of poor results and is unable to contend for race wins. Although Piastri is giving it his all, something or the other is causing him to lose focus on track and lose out on races.
As such, Oscar Piastri is sure to feel a bit negative, more so because of Lando Norris achieving better results than him. Ahead of the US GP, Jenson Button reckoned that if Piastri could manage to come out on top in Texas, he would build great momentum for the rest of the season. However, this wasn’t the case, and his struggles only increased following his outing in Austin.
Moreover, Lando Norris achieved a P2 finish, which was much better than Piastri’s insignificant P5 finish. Jenson Button noted that Norris had great confidence now, while the Aussie had to deal with a lot of negativity. Button claimed that people did not predict the 24-year-old to be so negative of himself and his results. However, the 2009 F1 champion acknowledged that he, too, was a human and they all were bound to feel low at times.
If he’s able to come out on top here, it’s a lot of confidence going into the rest of the season, and it’s more difficult then for Oscar as well. You guys go in completely different directions, so the confidence is with Lando, and the negativity is more with Oscar, which we never thought would happen with Oscar! But it happens, we’re all human. It’s sport — mentally, this sport is so tough.

Following a P5 finish at the US GP, the championship battle has come even closer between Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris, and Max Verstappen. While Piastri has remained strong in his results apart from the recent struggle, the rivals are starting to cope better as well. As such, the ex-F1 champion Damon Hill predicts an upcoming double attack on the Aussie as he aims to hold onto his championship lead.
Damon Hill pointed out that a driver started to worry when they saw their championship lead shrinking, especially at such a massive rate. Hence, Hill warned Oscar Piastri that he would have sleepless nights as anything could happen in the final five races. Moreover, the rival’s improving pace confirmed that Piastri would face a double attack from both Norris and Piastri until the very end of the 2025 season.
When you lead and you see the lead shrinking, you start to worry. There will be sleepless nights. So much can happen between now and the end of the season. And Oscar knows that Lando has tasted blood, he senses his chance. He will put pressure on. Oscar is now under a double attack in the championship.
Damon Hill said, as reported by f1-insider.com.
It would be too soon to write off Oscar Piastri’s championship chances, as he has remained dominant in his performance despite current difficulties. The Aussie will surely aim to bounce back even stronger in the final half of the 2025 season and achieve his coveted maiden F1 title.
