Juan Pablo Montoya Tells Oscar Piastri What He Must Avoid to Win The F1 World Championship

Oscar Piastri holds a commanding 34-point advantage at the top of the Formula 1 world championship. Despite this, Juan Pablo Montoya is adamant that the Australian needs to stay away from one potentially damaging scenario.

Lando Norris failed to see the chequered flag after retiring from the race at Zandvoort with an oil leak. This has given Piastri a significant advantage with nine rounds to go, and it's the first time reliability has played a major role in this year's title fight.

During his career, Montoya was electric behind the wheel in Formula 1. His flair-minded technique led him to seven victories while battling greats such as Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen.

The Colombian explained on the Weekend Warm-Up that Piastri needs to maintain his current style to win his first Formula 1 world championship and not change too much.

The former Williams and McLaren driver said: "He [Norris] needs to win seven out of the next nine races if he wants to really win the championship because they always finish in one and two.

"Unless something major happens, personally, I think Lando, at any position, Oscar is ahead, he needs to step up with the level of aggression and really go for moves to put Oscar in a difficult situation.

"I think from the Oscar side, I think Oscar is in a comfortable situation, but he should not change his approach. I think if he changes his approach, he's going to become vulnerable to Lando, I think."

The title battle will come down to fine margins

There is now significant pressure on Norris to close down his teammates' 34-point advantage. He will have to minimise any mistakes as McLaren are the benchmark heading into most events, likely to score podium finishes.

A victory at Monza would be the perfect end to the European season before a run of eight flyaway races as the season closes in Abu Dhabi.

Piastri has been ice-cool under pressure and made very few errors while only finishing outside the top five once this year.

There has been very little to choose between Piastri and Norris all year, and one of them is likely to win their first F1 crown this season. It may come down to the finest of margins as Formula 1's European leg of the season draws to a close.
