Fresh off sealing the 2025 Formula 1 Drivers' World Championship, Lando Norris will adopt car number 1 for the 2026 season, marking his first title defense and a symbolic shift in his career.

The announcement was shared on Formula 1’s official channels with a celebratory post featuring Norris’ McLaren sporting the No. 1 on next year’s papaya-and-black livery.

The number change doesn’t affect regulations or grid position, but in Formula 1, it carries strong symbolism. Only the reigning world champion is permitted to use No. 1.

In the hybrid era, that number has been seen only twice: Sebastian Vettel in 2014 and Max Verstappen from 2022 to 2025, as Lewis Hamilton chose to stick to his No. 44 throughout his title-winning years. Norris now joins that exclusive list next season.

McLaren fans who’ve watched Norris rise from rookie to title winner will now see that journey reflected on the car itself. The next McLaren challenger will carry a visible symbol of the British driver's success every time it hits the track.

What About Max Verstappen?

While Norris steps into the No. 1 seat, Max Verstappen is considering a number change of his own, adding another wrinkle to 2026’s identity shake-up.

During media duties in Las Vegas, the Dutchman revealed he is considering switching to race number 3, the number he originally wanted and a nod to former Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo, whose number becomes available again after his retirement.

The FIA is currently evaluating a rule change that would allow drivers to switch permanent numbers mid-career, meaning Verstappen’s request depends on 2026 regulation approval.

If granted, 2026 could feature Norris defending his title as No. 1 while Verstappen runs a number that carries personal history rather than championship symbolism, a compelling contrast between the two title protagonists.

What It Means for 2026

Norris’ number switch sets the tone for a new competitive chapter. Instead of the hunter, he becomes the hunted.

McLaren enters 2026 with the expectation of building a title-defending machine, and every driver in the field, including Verstappen and Oscar Piastri, will be measuring themselves directly against the man with the No. 1 on his car.

For Norris, the mentality remains the same: he chased the championship in 2025; now the championship will chase him.
