Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari haven’t had the best of campaigns this year. The seven-time world champion has struggled to adjust to his new team with no real standout performances to show for. The Italian GP saw some improvement for the Scuderia. However, Hamilton has admitted that a podium still remains beyond reach.
Since the start of the season, the 40-year-old has fallen behind his teammate Charles Leclerc. Lewis Hamilton is probably in his first season in F1 when he is yet to claim a podium finish. Although, he did win the Sprint in China.
Lewis Hamilton made some improvements this weekend at Monza, the Temple of Speed. The seven-time world champion was quite happy with his performance on Saturday despite facing a five-place penalty. During the race, Hamilton made his way to P6 from P10 on the grid. However, Hamilton and Leclerc failed to challenge the cars upfront.
After the Italian GP, Lewis Hamilton made it clear that Ferrari still doesn’t have the pace to fight for podiums. Although, the Ferrari star reckoned that perhaps an impressive outing could give them a chance for the top 3. Yet, Hamilton doesn’t expect such a scenario simply on the car’s pace.
I don’t think [there’s pace for podiums]. We don’t have the pace of Red Bull or McLaren. Currently we’re still 4th or 5th. Maybe if we do an exceptional job, we can pop off a podium here and there. There’s definitely a chance to now, at some point but in terms of pure pace we don’t currently have that.

Despite the reality check when it comes to podiums, Lewis Hamilton had a decent weekend at Monza. The seven-time world champion was able to make his way up the field as Ferrari arguably had the third fastest car on the grid. Moreover, Hamilton felt comfortable throughout the weekend.
Lewis Hamilton insisted that he felt really happy during the race. The 40-year-old had a good start which allowed him to fight for positions early on. Hamilton recalled that he almost had George Russell for fifth place. He hinted that perhaps an undercut would’ve allowed him to jump the Mercedes during the round of pitstops.
Definitely felt on top of it today. I was really happy with [the car]. I had such a really good launch, I got squeezed in between a couple of cars so I had to back off but then after that I was really happy with the position that I had into Turn 1 and Turn 4. I got really close to George. Probably in hindsight we should’ve tried to undercut him at that point, but going long didn’t pay off.

Certainly, Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari still have a long way to go before fighting for wins. It is unlikely that the Scuderia will have a chance to win races this year. Nevertheless, the Italian GP is a positive result with Hamilton getting a much-needed morale boost.
