Lewis Hamilton is trying everything to turn his season around, even sharing things with Ferrari that the team had never heard from past drivers like Michael Schumacher.

The 40-year-old’s move to Ferrari was meant to be the fulfilment of a lifelong ambition. But what began as a dream has quickly turned into a tough reality, with Hamilton now deep into the season still searching for his first podium.

Before joining Ferrari, the British driver had never gone this long without a podium in any of his previous seasons.

Hamilton’s struggles are reflected in the standings too. His 103 points after 12 rounds mark his lowest total since F1 switched to its current scoring system back in 2010. Of those points, 14 have come from Sprint events, including a win in China and third place in Miami.

Ferrari brought Hamilton in on a £39m-a-year deal through 2026, with an option for 2027, hoping he and Charles Leclerc could finally bring the team their first drivers’ title since 2007 and their first constructors’ crown since 2008.

But Hamilton has noticed issues within Maranello that go well beyond the car itself. According to Corriere della Sera, his push to be a reformist voice inside Ferrari is already running into resistance from within the organisation.

In his effort to help turn things around, Hamilton hasn’t been shy about offering ideas. The scale of change he’s proposing is something even Michael Schumacher never spoke about during his time with the team from 1996 to 2006.

Publicly, at least, there’s no record of Schumacher calling out as many operational weaknesses as Hamilton has recently highlighted. And it’s clear that Hamilton isn’t limiting his feedback just to what happens on track – he’s looking at the bigger picture.

The seven-time world champion has kept detailed notes comparing Ferrari’s setup to what he experienced at Mercedes between 2013 and 2024. His observations cover everything from technical instructions to meeting structures and decision-making processes.

Lewis Hamilton sends Ferrari ‘documents’ with his requested changes

Hamilton isn’t the first Ferrari driver to keep a detailed record of what needs fixing. Sebastian Vettel did the same during his time at Maranello, and according to Corriere della Sera, some engineers were wary of his thorough notes and long debriefs.

It’s unclear how the current staff will respond to Hamilton’s input, especially given his success with Mercedes. He won six of his seven titles there, along with 84 Grand Prix victories and 77 pole positions.

Hamilton started using a notebook in his first week at Ferrari back in January. It was meant to help him communicate more clearly with Riccardo Adami, as he adjusted to working with a new race engineer after Peter Bonnington remained at Mercedes.

He has since provided multiple reports detailing the modifications he considers essential. These go beyond upgrades to the 2025 car, extending to wider organisational tweaks in preparation for the 2026 Formula 1 rule changes.
