With Max Verstappen leading comfortably from pole in Abu Dhabi, his teammate was playing a supporting role further back.

Lando Norris, Verstappen’s main title challenger, found himself stuck behind Yuki Tsunoda and knew overtaking him would not be straightforward.

At a crucial moment in the season-deciding race, Red Bull could count on their second driver to play a part in the championship battle.

The Englishman eventually passed Tsunoda, but he did so by going off track. Stewards soon announced they were looking into whether he had gained an unfair advantage.

The situation brought back memories of FP3 on Saturday when some fans felt Tsunoda had got in Norris’ way during practice. That near-miss could easily have led to something much more serious.

Damon Hill described Verstappen’s performance as “flawless” after he secured pole with two impressive laps and controlled the race from start to finish in Abu Dhabi.

His teammate, though, picked up a five-second penalty for moving more than once while defending against Norris.

Norris also avoided a penalty despite going completely off-track to pass Tsunoda, which led to a flurry of comments on social media.

One fan said: “Norris literally gained an advantage?”

“Either penalise both or none imo,” wrote another user who felt that Tsunoda’s punishment was too harsh.

“Biggest robbery of all time,” posted a third fan, who saw it as an unfair outcome.

Another added: “Absolutely done. FIA is so done.”

A final opinion summed up the mood for some: “Of course not, Yuki shouldn’t have weaved sure, but that doesn’t allow Norris to go off the track around him. Blatantly a penalty.”

Could Verstappen have done anything differently to win the 2025 title?

Verstappen fell just two points short of securing his fifth straight drivers’ title at Yas Marina.

Kimi Antonelli’s error at the Qatar Grand Prix handed Norris two extra points, and that moment ended up being more important than it seemed at the time. Without those, Norris would not have taken the title.

Verstappen chose to ‘race cleanly’, and he stuck to that approach. He did not try to influence the outcome or force a different result.

He made very few errors across the year, but the Spanish Grand Prix is one that might linger in his thoughts for a while.
