Max Verstappen saw his race end prematurely at the Chinese GP after suffering a technical failure late in the race at the Shanghai International Circuit.

The Red Bull Racing driver encountered the issue on Lap 46 of the 56-lap race while running sixth. Verstappen was instructed by his team to return the car to the pit lane and retire it rather than stopping opn track, which could have triggered a safety car and disrupted the race.

The retirement ended what had been a difficult but competitve race for the reigning world champion, who has been battling in the midfield throughout the event.

What Happened to Verstappen in the Chinese GP

The problem emerged during the closing stages of the race when Verstappen suddenly began to lose pace.

Red Bull quickly informed him over the radio that the car had developed a technical issue, with reports indicating the car’s dashboard and electronics shut down mid-race, forcing the team to retire the car as a precaution.

At the time of the issue, Verstappen was running sixth and appeared set to collect valuable championship points.

Instead of pulling over on the circuit, Verstappen attempted to guide the car back to the pit lane. This strategy helps teams avoid deploying a Safety Car or Virtual Safety Car, which can dramatically affect the outcome of the race for drivers still competing.

Despite the attempt to nurse the car back, Verstappen ultimately had to retire, marking a disappointing end to his afternoon in Shanghai.

Red Bull’s Difficult Weekend in Shanghai

Verstappen’s retirement capped off a challenging weekend for Red Bull. Even before the race, the four-time world champion had voiced frustration with the handling of the RB22, describing the car as extremely difficult to drive during qualifying.

The Dutch driver had qualified eighth and struggled with pace compared with rivals from Mercedes and Ferrari, suggesting Red Bull was facing a rare performance deficit early in the 2026 season.

Those struggles continued in the race as Verstappen fought in the midfield rather than competing for victory.
