Max Verstappen is known to push himself to the limit. Since last year, the Dutch driver has outdriven Red Bull machinery to the front of the grid. While the 27-year-old was successful in defending the title in 2024, things have not been so easy this time around. Now, Verstappen has admitted that the RB21 is not exactly according to his preferences.
In recent years, Red Bull has gained a reputation of building some difficult-to-drive cars. Drivers such as Pierre Gasly and Sergio Perez have failed to even come close to Verstappen due to their inability to extract the pace out of the car. Though, critics would often claim that the team tuned its machinery according to Max Verstappen‘s driving style.
The four-time world champion has addressed such speculation. Max Verstappen made it clear that the RB21 is not what he would like as a car. Rather, the Dutch driver is simply adapting to the machinery. Moreover, the Red Bull star pointed out that he outdrives the car at every track simply in an attempt to get the best result possible from something that he personally doesn’t like.
I adapt to what I have. It’s not what I like, it’s simply what I have. I have to try to drive in that direction because it’s the fastest way to travel the track, but it’s not what I personally would like.
Max Verstappen said, as quoted by FormulaPassion.it
Max Verstappen reckoned that he would like to change a few things in the car. The 27-year-old was content with his performances, and didn’t need to prove himself to anyone. Instead, Verstappen simply tests his limits in a bid to get the best out of himself on-track.
I would like different components on the machine. I’m happy with my performance, but I’m not doing it to show people what I’m capable of. I do it because I want to be the best with myself.

The past four years have been life-changing for Max Verstappen. The Dutch driver not only ended Lewis Hamilton’s dominance in 2021, but even won four consecutive world titles. This established Verstappen as an all-time great in F1 history. Now, the 27-year-old has set some really high standards for himself.
The reigning world champion asserted that he was a perfectionist when it came to on-track performance. Max Verstappen admitted that no matter how well he performs on-track, he feels like his results aren’t good enough. While this can indeed help a driver improve after a bad day in the office, it could also become demoralizing if Verstappen doesn’t appreciate his better results.
In that sense, I’m quite a perfectionist, it’s never enough and if I can get out of the car and tell myself ‘this is good enough’, it’s never good enough.
Max Verstappen stated
Certainly, Max Verstappen is racing at the peak of his career. The four-time world champion is giving himself no room for mistakes. Despite Red Bull’s struggles virtually ruling him out of a title fight, Verstappen does not want to see any further dip in his performances.
