The Dallas Cowboys could be down two of their best defenders when they open the regular season against the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 4.
The situation with Micah Parsons and owner Jerry Jones has deteriorated in recent days amid the pass-rusher's hold-in for a contract extension. Another player the Cowboys had drama with this summer, Trevon Diggs, isn't sure he will return from his knee injury in time for Week 1.
Per Todd Archer of ESPN, Diggs told the media on Friday night that he feels better than he should but wasn't sure he could play against the Eagles. He wants to return to practice before playing in a live game.
"I want to practice a lot," Diggs said. "I want to get as much practice as possible, get the game r eps in, get the live reps in. I haven't practiced in a while, so I feel the practice will tell a lot more where I am."
The Cowboys criticized Diggs for not being with the team during OTAs this spring, arguing that he might be further along in his recovery if he worked with the training and medical staff in Dallas.
While the two sides had disagreements about his rehab, Diggs thinks his return date will be a mutual decision.
"I think it's a mutual decision," Diggs said. "If they see something that I don't see or if I feel something that they don't know that I feel, it's going to be that. It's just about communicating and going out there and seeing what I can do."
Diggs' injury is another reason why the Cowboys need to end the hold-in with Parsons as soon as possible. Dallas needs its pass rush to be strong without Diggs on the field. Even when the All-Pro cornerback returns, it might take him a few games to settle in.
