Max Verstappen once again achieved the unthinkable and clinched a shock pole position at Ferrari’s home ground of the Italian GP. Verstappen did not seem to look on par for a P1 start, especially with Red Bull’s degrading pace. However, the 27-year-old emerged as the better driver and trumped the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri for the Pole. Now, the Dutchman opened up and revealed his delight with the positive Qualifying for the Italian GP.

Red Bull did not bring a special rear wing at the Italian GP despite the circuit being run with very high speeds. Max Verstappen had cast his doubts on coming up as a dominant driver on track following the upgrades not being added to the car. However, the 27-year-old made all the difference on the track and achieved a pole position start for Ferrari’s home race.

Max Verstappen trumped Lando Norris by just 0.077 seconds and snatched the pole position away from the McLaren driver. The Dutchman will now have a great shot at victory and closing down the 70-point deficit to Norris in the runner-up spot in the title standings. As such, Verstappen opened up on his great feat and revealed the changes that helped him become successful in qualifying.

Max Verstappen revealed that Red Bull made some last-minute changes to the car in an effort to find any possible improvement in the car. These changes, although minor, helped Verstappen greatly and achieve a pole position start for the Italian GP. The four-time world champion labeled the shock pole as a ‘great moment’ not only for himself but for Red Bull as a whole.

We made some final changes that allowed me to push a bit more, and for us it is a great moment.

Max Verstappen exposes Red Bull’s weakness in 2025

Red Bull’s performance since the beginning of the 2025 season has remained mediocre even though Max Verstappen achieved two coveted race wins. Since the Emilia Romagna GP in Imola, Verstappen could not quite return to his winning pace and emerge victorious on track. As such, the 27-year-old made a shocking acceptance of the Austrian constructor’s form and his own shortcomings on track.

Max Verstappen asserted that race pace and performance hadn’t been Red Bull’s strength, especially in the 2025 season. Even though the Dutchman achieved a great start to the race in the Saturday session, he still lost quite some performance during race day. Regardless, Verstappen is ready to give it his all at the Italian GP and hopes to hold onto his race lead and emerge victorious in the end.

This season it hasn’t been our strength (the race), but we are going to give it our best.

Max Verstappen noted

The 2025 season has been extremely exciting, especially between Max Verstappen and the front of the pack. The Dutchman is keeping the rivals on their toes despite suffering from a lack of pace in his Red Bull challenger. Milton Keynes will still need to cover massive grounds of improvement against the other teams at the forefront if they want to provide Verstappen with a realistic shot at championship.
