Four-time F1 world champion Max Verstappen was taken to the circuit medical centre after a crash during qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix, following an incident that ended his session early.

The Red Bull Racing driver lost control of his car during Q1 at Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, spinning into the barrier after experiencing what he described as a sudden rear axle lock-up under braking.

Although the impact itself was not severe, Verstappen said the force of the incident caused the steering wheel to be pulled out of his hands, prompting the mandatory medical evaluation that followed.

Max Verstappen Explains What Happened in the Crash

Speaking after the session, Verstappen said the crash occured unexpectedly when the rear axle locked as he applied the brakes entering the first corner.

“I just hit the brakes and suddenly the rear axle completely locked out of the blue. I don’t know why that happened or how that happened. I’ve never experienced something like that before in my career.”

The sudden loss of rear grip caused the car to spin, leaving the driver unable to regain control at that speed.

“Then of course you can’t save that anymore at that speed.”

The Red Bull slid into the barriers, bringing out a red flag during the early stages of the qualifying session.

A Rare Setback for the Red Bull Driver

The incident marks a rare qualifying setback for Verstappen, who has built a reputation for consistency and control under pressure.

Because the crash occurred in Q1, the Dutch driver was unable to set a competitive lap time and is expected to start the race significantly further down the grid than usual.

At a circuit like Albert Park, where overtaking opportunities can be limited compared to other venues, starting near the back could make Sunday’s race far more challenging.

However, Verstappen has previously demonstrated strong recovery drives when starting outside the top positions, and Red Bull will now focus on maximizing strategy opportunities during the race.
