Oscar Piastri told to think only of himself as McLaren team orders raise questions

Oscar Piastri is closing in on his first Formula 1 world title, but Karun Chandhok believes he still has one key step to take if he wants to secure it, especially after a team order from McLaren that raised some eyebrows.

Lando Norris managed to cut into Piastri’s championship lead again in Singapore, a race that started poorly for the Australian following an early clash between the two McLaren drivers.

The team decided not to penalise Norris for the incident, which has fuelled speculation that McLaren are leaning towards supporting Norris in the title race.

Mark Webber has been advocating for Piastri within McLaren. Having experienced similar issues during his time at Red Bull, Webber is determined not to let history repeat itself now that Piastri is close to achieving something big.

Piastri still leads Norris by 22 points in the standings and knows he needs to build on that cushion before things get even tighter.

Karun Chandhok thinks Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris need to be ‘more selfish’ in their F1 title fight against each other

During the United States Grand Prix, Karun Chandhok spoke with David Croft and Ted Kravitz on Sky Sports F1’s Paddock Uncut, giving his thoughts on how things are playing out inside the McLaren camp.

Speaking about the tight championship battle between Piastri and Norris, the former F1 driver said: “Now that the constructors’ title is settled, I want to see them being a bit more selfish because this is a life-defining thing they’re fighting for.

“This is not an egg and spoon race at the local preschool. This is a world championship, and they might only have one opportunity.

“Talk to Damon Hill, talk to Jenson Button, talk to Jacques Villeneuve. This is something that matters for the rest of their lives.”

Croft followed up by saying: “And where I think this is a bit counterintuitive is that all season long, McLaren have stressed and have been correct when they’ve stressed this, that the drivers are free to race each other, and were not going to interfere as long as they respect each other.”

“But now with one quarter of the season to go, McLaren are now interfering with what the drivers can and can’t do?”

Lando Norris kept quiet about the ‘repercussions’ he’ll be facing for his Singapore clash

Those remarks came after Norris told Kravitz that he’s already dealing with consequences for his lap one collision with Piastri back in Singapore.

Asked what action was taken over the incident, Norris said: “Of course, things are reviewed and yeah, there are, and will be repercussions for me to the end of the season.

“So yeah, it’s not like I’ve gotten away with anything, but it was also an incident that, let’s say, was small and there was potential to try and avoid it.

“It’s something I never want to do; I said it back after the race. I can’t afford to make contact and have anything happen like what happened because I put just as much risk on my whole championship from something going wrong as I do on whoever I might be racing against.

“So, of course, repercussions for myself. But otherwise, the engagement and how we go racing is the same as it’s always been.”

Norris wouldn’t give any more detail when pressed about what those repercussions might be. McLaren have been told to let their drivers race freely, so any punishment handed down could add fuel to concerns over how they’re handling things internally.
