Max Verstappen has kept up with his impressive performances this year despite Red Bull’s massive issues. Milton Keynes is trying their best to get out of the slump, but isn’t successful in doing so yet. Due to this, rumors have started to come up about Verstappen considering exiting the Austrian outfit and looking to join Mercedes. McLaren’s Zak Brown has put forth his piece on mind on the matter and given a brutal verdict on Red Bull’s condition in the absence of the Dutchman.
Max Verstappen has emerged as the only driver at Red Bull capable of amassing major points. Notably, Verstappen has achieved 155 points out of 162 total for Milton Keynes in the constructors’ standings. The second driver problem at the team has continued despite them replacing multiple drivers till now. Due to this, Zak Brown points out the bitter truth and what the Austrian constructor would be if even the Dutchman didn’t score points.
Over the past couple of seasons, Max Verstappen has not only remained unbeaten but unmatched in terms of performance by his teammates. The Dutchman is 61 points behind the championship leader, Oscar Piastri, who is racing in a much superior car. As such, Verstappen’s chances for the championship aren’t discounted yet despite him seeming to lose a lot of the running already.
Zak Brown didn’t mince his words and asserted that Red Bull would be nothing without Max Verstappen being present. The McLaren Racing CEO noted that Milton Keynes would be behind their sister team, Racing Bulls. Moreover, the Englishman insisted that RB had done an exceptional job with their challenger this year, as Verstappen continued to ‘carry’ the parent team in Red Bull.
Red Bull would be behind Racing Bulls [without Verstappen]. They have done a great job and have a great racing car. I think Max is carrying them at the moment.
Zak Brown told Sky Sports F1
Max Verstappen’s move to Mercedes seemed like a far-fetched dream a couple of years back as he was completely against the idea. Even now, the Dutchman has refused to comment on the matter, but hasn’t formally declined all speculations. Zak Brown guesses that this awkward phase of communication from Verstappen’s side means that something is brewing behind the curtains which wouldn’t be revealed up until the very last moment.
Zak Brown pointed out the fact that everyone talked about Max Verstappen’s move to Mercedes with seemingly no endpoint currently. However, these rumors already meant that there was something afoot in the background. The 53-year-old declared that conversations were going on between the two parties in secrecy. Moreover, Brown recalled that he had already talked about not being surprised when the 27-year-old does leave Red Bull and jumps to the German carmaker in Formula 1.
The fact everyone’s talking and no one is confirming anything, tells me there are conversations going on. I said a while ago I wouldn’t be surprised to see Max in a Mercedes.
Zak Brown added
The 2025 season has peaked in competition and excitement due to these unthinkable conditions. The season is almost halfway over, and neither championship are already a done deal. Verstappen will give it his all in the remaining races and not back down despite the disappointing circumstances. More news is likely to follow by the summer break if not before that, as the Dutchman might be getting impatient now.
