While BYU Cougars only had a .500 record in 2026, it wasn’t that bad of a campaign. BYU went nearly .500 in Big 12 play, and picked up a win in the 2026 postseason tournament. What also works in their favor is the fact that several familiar faces will be back for the 2027 season.
Now-junior Ezra McNaughton was one of the top hitters not just in the Big 12 last season but also in all of Division I.
Last season with the Cougars, McNaughton had 80 total hits, which ranked him in the top 80 of DI players. He slashed .346/.420/.632 with 16 home runs, a figure that also led all BYU hitters. In total, he racked up 32 extra-base hits.
He’s joined by former TCU transfer Ryder Robinson, who himself had a great year as a junior in 2026. Robinson picked up 75 hits, 11 of which were home runs and 25 were extra-base hits.
Other regulars for the 2026 BYU team who returned were Tu’alau Wolfgramm, Matt Hansen, and Ridge Erickson.
As for the pitching staff, Nate Gray finished second on the Cougars in strikeouts (56), although he also walked 40 over 58 innings. Gray will be joined by two-way player Austin Park, who pitched in 18 games last season, plus Justis Reiser, Cayson Bell, Tyler Ball, and Dan Brosseau.
The JC/CC market helped fill out the 2027 BYU roster.
Blake Lewis came over from Grayson CC, while infielder/outfielder Owen Musil came over from Kansas CC. Both are sophomores.
Jaxon Grossman is on his third DI school, as the now-senior was with Utah and Oklahoma. Jacob Imoto, a junior from Arkansas who didn’t pitch for the Razorbacks, is also now with BYU.
Easton Brooks spent two seasons as a reliever with Utah Tech. Brooks struck out 29 over 28 innings last season as a sophomore.
BYU’s roster also includes seven freshmen.
