Alabama Baseball Needs Jesus to Save Them

TUSCALOOSA — The Alabama Crimson Tide baseball program may need a miracle.

Not a rally in the ninth inning. Not a clutch home run. A full-blown, choir-singing, clouds-parting miracle.

Because if history tells us anything, it’s that Alabama baseball keeps finding itself in the same postseason storyline: strong regular season, respectable record, NCAA Tournament bid — and then a quick exit, often as a No. 2 seed in a regional somewhere like Hattiesburg.

Cue the 0-2 exit.

Cue the ride home.

Cue the existential questions.

Now, before the pitchforks come out across Tuscaloosa, let’s be clear: about half of this column is sarcasm. Alabama baseball is not actually condemned to eternal sporting purgatory. The program has produced plenty of talent, competes in the brutal Southeastern Conference, and routinely does enough to reach the NCAA Tournament.

But that’s also the point.

For years, the Tide have often looked the part of a contender on paper — good arms, a capable lineup, a solid record against tough competition. Yet when postseason time arrives, the magic rarely follows.

The result has been a reputation — fair or not — as college baseball’s version of a “paper tiger.” Dangerous in theory, but still searching for the breakthrough moment that turns a good program into a feared one.

Of course, the fan base of all 5 people remains loyal. After all, this is Alabama. Faith runs deep, patience runs thin, and optimism always finds a way to return by opening day.

So the message around the ballpark is simple.

God bless the Tide.
God bless Dixie.
And if there’s a little spare help available upstairs when regional time arrives, Alabama baseball would certainly appreciate it.

Because one of these years, the Tide would like to leave Hattiesburg — or wherever the bracket sends them — with something better than two losses and a long drive home.

Start winning when it matters. As a proud Bama alumnus, we can do better. If not, start a hockey team instead.
