Alabama football knows it needs athletic, long and rangy defenders on its roster for the foreseeable future.
The Crimson Tide’s 2026 recruiting class is loaded with players who fit this profile. From five-star linebacker Xavier Griffin to five-star defensive back Jireh Edwards, it is clear Alabama wants length and athleticism on every level of its defense.
Kane Wommack provided insight on this approach on Wednesday.
“We believe in putting athletes on the field,” Wommack said. “So, athletic people that can make plays in space can do multiple things for you. We’re going to recruit to that. If there’s been an indicator of what we do, long people that can make space tackles. That is the mold of what we are looking for in the recruiting area.”
Griffin is one of the most athletic players in the Crimson Tide’s 2026 class. Alabama is looking to use his athleticism and his versatility to its full potential.
“They told me I will be playing linebacker and the Wolf,” Griffin said on “The Process.” “I didn’t want to just play one position.”

This approach should help Alabama’s defense continue to evolve as offensive players continue to become more dangerous.
