Gary Lineker could not resist poking fun at Alan Shearer over a Manchester United player during their chat about Bruno Fernandes’ showing against Fulham.

Fernandes was once again in central midfield, just as he was during United’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal at Old Trafford.

He partnered with Casemiro in midfield and played the full 90 minutes of the 1-1 draw on Sunday, yet it was an unremarkable display.

The Portugal international struggled to find his footing, did not have much impact on the game from his deeper role in Ruben Amorim’s system, and even missed a penalty.

Manchester United missed a big opportunity early in their match against Fulham, with a first-half penalty going wide of the mark.

VAR called over referee Chris Kavanagh to review a challenge from Calvin Bassey on Mason Mount inside the box, leading to the decision.

Fernandes has generally been reliable from 12 yards, but this time his effort flew over the bar without troubling Bernd Leno.

Alan Shearer did not hold back when discussing it with Gary Lineker on The Rest Is Football podcast.

“I mean, the penalty was awful, wasn’t it? It doesn’t matter about that. But I think it was a penalty, probably. Yeah,” he said.

Gary Lineker quizzes Alan Shearer over the idea of Bryan Mbeumo taking over penalty duties from Bruno Fernandes at Manchester United

Lineker put the question to Shearer about whether Ruben Amorim might consider giving penalty duties to Bryan Mbeumo instead of Bruno Fernandes.

The Newcastle legend had just pointed out that Fernandes’ miss was not great, and Lineker followed up by saying: “Do they put Mbeumo on penalties now?

“Because he’s so good at penalties, isn’t he? He was like last season [at Brentford], I mean, he didn’t miss.”

But Shearer felt it was too soon for any changes, suggesting that one missed penalty should not be enough to lose the role.

He told Lineker: “No, you’re allowed, I think you’re allowed to miss one, aren’t you?

“Then if you miss two on the spin, then I get you’ve got to hand it over. But you’re allowed to miss one.”

Lineker seemed to back up Shearer’s viewpoint, although there were some audio issues during that part of the episode.
