Chris Vannini of The Athletic floated Matt Campbell’s name in connection with the UCLA job opening. Vannini described Campbell as “a popular name on coaching lists.” He noted that Campbell has turned down a lot of interest, choosing to remain at Iowa State for now. Vannini pointed out that Campbell has built a tough program that draws the most out of its players. Last season, the Cyclones reached the Big 12 Championship Game. This year, they are off to a 4‑0 start.
Campbell’s record at Iowa State shows steady progress. He has managed to win despite limitations in resources compared to some Power Four rivals. Wins over tough opponents, consistent performance, disciplined teams—all of those features show up under Campbell. Going 4‑0 so far in 2025 has raised expectations in Ames and abroad.
Linking Campbell to UCLA makes sense in the eyes of many analysts. UCLA is a program with talent, finances, history, and pressure to win. For Campbell, that job would represent a leap. But staying at Iowa State gives him control, continuity, and a platform that rewards steady growth rather than quick fixes.
Campbell’s decision to stay when others call suggests that he believes in the work in Ames. Success in the Big 12 does not come easily. Coaching turnover, recruiting battles, and injury issues are all part of the job. But Iowa State has shown it can absorb those pressures better than many expected this far.
Whichever way the UCLA job may go, Campbell’s position right now is strong. He is viewed as a builder. He has momentum. And right now, doing good work in difficult situations often speaks louder than chasing brighter lights.
Whether or not Matt Campbell has any interest in leaving Ames remains to be seen. But at this point, his name deserves to be in every major coaching conversation. He has done more than enough to earn any opportunity that comes his way.
