Anthony Richardson Gives His Unfiltered Opinion on DJ Lagway
Corey Perrine/Florida Times-Union

Anthony Richardson is just trying to pass it forward. The Florida Gators alumnus spoke with Zach Goodall at Swamp247 to share his thoughts on this year's Gators team.

In 2022, Richardson was flashing big-time upside and after just one year as the team's starting signal-caller, the 6-foot-4, 244-pound prospect made the leap to the NFL, where he would go No. 4 overall in the 2023 draft to the Indianapolis Colts.

In 2024, DJ Lagway was an incoming true freshman who was supposed to be learning the ropes from incumbent starter Graham Mertz. However, the five-star recruit was forced into action after Mertz went down with a season-ending ACL tear.

Lagway finished the year with 1,915 yards, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Richardson had plenty of praise and optimism to provide when speaking about Lagway's game and what to expect in 2025.

“He's a great player. I like watching him ball. I was watching him ball when he was in high school, so just watching him play and do his thing, it's amazing," Richardson said. "That's why I don't really bother him too much because he's already doing great things."

Lagway was rated the No. 3 player in the 2024 class by 247Sports, as well as the top quarterback and top player from Texas. He was viewed as a "dual-threat quarterback with enormous potential given rare athletic frame and natural arm talent," according to Andrew Ivins, 247Sports' director of scouting.

"I think really his mental – you know, he's young right now, but you can't really tell," Richardson continued. "He doesn't act his age at all. You know, he's a phenomenal leader, and I've never seen him really get too high or too low on himself; he's always trying to work. He's always asking me questions about how to get better and do certain things, and I always tell him, 'Man, just keep doing you and just keep working. Everything's going to take care of itself.'"

Fox Sports' Joel Klatt recently ranked Lagway as the seventh-best quarterback in college football.

ESPN's David Hale had a similar assessment of Lagway, slotting him in Tier 1b with three quarterbacks, behind a group of five Tier 1a quarterbacks.

Lagway is still on the mend from injuries sustained last season, including a lingering shoulder issue. Gators head coach Billy Napier provided an update last month that the 6-foot-3, 239-pound quarterback was on track for summer practices.
