The nation of India and the world of marathon running was hit by tragedy this week as world famous marathon runner Fauja Singh was killed in a hit-and-run.

But an arrest has now been made.

According to journalist Gagandeep Singh, Amritpal Singh Dhillon of Canada was arrested on Tuesday after he reportedly confessed to killing the 114-year-old marathon runner. Dhillon reportedly said during questioning that he was driving at a high speed when Singh "suddenly appeared" while crossing the road. In a panic, Dhillon left the scene and claims he didn't know Singh's identity.

"The driver who hit 114-year-old marathon runner Fauja Singh has been arrested. The accused, Amritpal Singh Dhillon, a non-resident Indian (NRI) from Canada, had arrived in India eight days ago and is a resident of Dasupur village, Kartarpur. He has been taken into custody. The Fortuner vehicle (PB 20 C 7100) involved in the accident has also been seized. The accused has confessed to the crime, stating that he was alone at the time of the incident and was traveling from Bhogpur towards Kishangarh. An FIR has been registered at the Adampur police station. Acting swiftly under Sections 281 and 105 of the BNS, the police apprehended the accused," Singh wrote.

"Amritpal Singh Dhillon from Canada has been arrested for hitting 114-year-old marathon legend Fauja Singh. During questioning, he said he didn’t know Fauja Singh’s identity and panicked after the accident. He claimed the car was at high speed and couldn’t stop when Fauja Singh suddenly appeared while crossing the road," he added in a follow-up report.

Fauja Singh was born in 1911 and had a passion for running when he was young, but gave it up as an adult.

However, a series of terrible family tragedies in the 1990s prompted Singh to take up the passion again - well into his 80s - and he soon gained global recognition for competing in multiple marathons.

At the age of 93, Singh set a world record for marathon completion time by a person over the age of 90 - shattering the mark by nearly an hour.

At the age of 100, Singh broke numerous world records by completing yet another marathon. He competed in his final marathon in February 2013 at the age of 103.

Our hearts go out to Singh's family and loved ones.

As for Dhillon, we will have to wait and see how the legal process plays out for him.
