Diego Pavia has seen his path to the NFL narrow following his draft snub last month.
The former Vanderbilt star went undrafted after his exploits with the Commodores last season but received a minicamp invite from the Baltimore Ravens.
He’s trying to win a roster spot and has received a direct challenge from the coaching staff.
It was already tough having to battle it out for a roster spot with another quarterback. His task has become monumentally difficult, as he’s now set to duke it out with two.
NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Ravens have signed veteran QB Skylar Thompson, which will leave them with five quarterbacks on their roster.
“The #Ravens are expected to sign veteran QB Skylar Thompson, source said, and Baltimore will likely carry 5 QBs for the time being,” Rapoport shared via social media.
While Thompson isn’t a starter by league standards, he should pose a considerable threat. He’s also got the experience to learn Baltimore’s offense and slot in should he ever be needed.
Pavia, last season’s SEC Offensive Player of the Year, has his work cut out for him. He will need to prove that he has what it takes for the Ravens to consider developing him as a third-stringer behind Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley.
The role is clearly up for grabs, with the Ravens making the competition even tougher for the diminutive signal-caller.
He is one of two undrafted rookie QBs training with the team at the moment, the other being former UConn standout Joe Fagnano.
Of the three, Thompson should have the best shot at QB3. The Ravens wouldn’t have signed him if they didn’t see him as a potential third option.
He’s also unlikely to end up on the practice squad, blurring Pavia’s line of sight to a roster spot.
Even getting on the practice squad will be harder now that a new QB is in the mix.
