A longtime St. Louis sports radio broadcaster tragically passed away over the weekend.
Brian McKenna, who was a popular host for KFNS 590 The Fan, died when he was struck and killed by a car around 1 a.m. Saturday morning. McKenna was 61. According to reports, his body was found at Hampton Avenue and Nottingham Avenue, where paramedics pronounced him dead on the scene.
In addition to his radio work, McKenna, who previously survived a battle with cancer, was well-known for his philanthropic efforts with multiple local charities.
"Our hearts are broken. The family & every person whose life this incredible human touched are in our thoughts. We’ll work to keep his light shining bright in this city. It’s hard to lose your Heroes, and Brian McKenna was just that to so many," one of those organizations, the St. Louis Hero Network, said in a Facebook post Saturday.
The St. Louis Hero Network also included McKenna's signature tagline, "your vibe attracts your tribe."
Other tributes poured in for the fallen radio personality on social media.
"Saddened to hear of the tragic passing of Brian McKenna, a beloved voice in St. Louis radio. His personality and contributions to the STL airwaves will be deeply missed. My thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time," Congressman Wesley Bell said in a statement.
"Brian was an incredible person who brought a smile to your face by simply seeing him walk into the room," added the "Brighter Side of Blue" podcast. "His charismatic personality was infectious. His positive attitude, toughness, as well as his sense of humor, during his battles to beat cancer was inspiring to everyone that knew him."
"I just can’t even believe what I’m hearing today about Brian McKenna. Just last month I randomly bumped into him for the first time in like 20 years on a visit back to STL. We had a long chat and I got to tell him I love him. One of the truly great guys I’ve know. I’m heartbroken," John Rabe added.
Our thoughts and prayers are with McKenna's family and friends.
