Even as Bill Belichick prepares for his North Carolina debut, it’s clear that Robert Kraft and the New England Patriots remain on his mind.
Speaking with the Boston Globe earlier this week, Belichick admitted that he’s excited about coaching the Tar Heels because he doesn’t need to deal with an owner or “owner’s son.” It’s hard not to view those comments as a dig at Kraft and his son, Jonathan, who has been the Patriots’ president since 2005.
Unsurprisingly, Belichick’s remarks caught the attention of Boston radio hosts Tony Massarotti and Mike Felger, both of whom slammed the Patriots’ longti me coach on Thursday. Felger went all-in, calling Belichick everything from “delusional” and “obstinate” to “completely arrogant” and “half-nuts.”
Although Massarotti praised Belichick’s coaching ability, he nonetheless called the eight-time Super Bowl champion a “raging a-hole.”
“He knew what to do with Tom Brady,” Massarotti said on WBZ-FM. “But he’s an ass.”
Massarotti accused the “oblivious” Belichick of throwing people under the bus nearly two years after mutually parting ways with the Patriots.
“There’s no accountability,” Massarotti argued. “There’s no real self-reflection there.”
It’s no secret that Belichick has always had complicated relationships with many of the Patriots’ key figures, including Kraft and Brady. However, both Belichick and Kraft have fired shots at one another over the last 18 months.
Notably, Kraft said earlier this year that he took a “big risk” trading a first-round pick to the New York Jets for Belichick in 2000. Belichick later fired back, arguing he took the risk by joining a Patriots team that others around the league viewed as dysfunctional.
Belichick also omitted any mention of Kraft in his book “The Art of Winning: Lessons from My Life in Football,” which was released in May.
For now, Belichick and Kraft have bigger problems on their respective plates. Belichick is a first-year college football coach tasked with leading the Tar Heels to their first ACC title since 1980. Meanwhile, Kraft’s Patriots haven’t reached the postseason since 2021, and they haven’t won a playoff game since defeating the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl 53.
We’ll eventually see both parties put their differences aside and make up before it’s too late. For now, though, don’t be surprised to see Belichick and Kraft continue making veiled insults about one another.
