Cam Newton, former NFL MVP and one of the most physically dominant quarterbacks in football history, had a strong reaction to a viral high school clip of BYU freshman Bear Bachmeier.
The clip, which has made the rounds across social media, shows Bachmeier in high school trucking through a defender on a run and finishing the play in the end zone. What caught Newton’s attention wasn’t just the run itself but the jersey number. Bachmeier wore No. 47 in the video, a rare sight for a quarterback at any level.

“Hold on, was that the quarterback? And was his number 47?” Newton said while watching the play. “Defenders, you must identify the context clues. If a quarterback got a number other than the 19 other numbers that he could wear, you know that motherf***** ain’t trying to throw the ball.”
The clip quickly went viral again, this time with Newton’s voiceover amplifying its reach. Fans praised the former Heisman Trophy winner for his comedic timing, but also for offering a little wisdom for defenders trying to read offensive schemes. The line between a quarterback who throws and one who lowers his shoulder gets a little blurrier when they wear a linebacker’s number.
Bachmeier, now at BYU, is trending toward earning the starting job this fall. His physicality and fearless running style made him a standout at Murrieta Valley High School, and his toughness has already caught the attention of coaches in Provo.
Whether or not Bacmeier sticks with No. 47 throughout his career is yet to be seen, but it did earn him a shoutout from one of the game’s most recognizable voices. Not a bad start for a freshman.
